JULY 4TH
"Agh!"
"You're doing great, Anne," I whispered taking a piece of her dead skin off.
"It's okay. Just keep going."
Taking her deep breaths, as usual, I keep going.
"Tell me more about how you're gonna fix me."
"Okay, well, our next surgery is to remove the skin from around your hips and graft onto these cheek scars here and then here," I say pointing to her cheekbones.
"So, you're gonna chop off my love handles?" She said, making us and J.J. chuckled on the other side of the room.
"Did you hear that, J.J.? I'm gonna get a smaller waist out of this."
"Oh, they can take whatever they want off my ass," J.J. adds.
"When do we get started?" She asked.
"Well, I just need to get that infection in your nose under control before we start the grafting procedures."
"I see. So, um...it's still gonna be a little while before we really get going with the grafts, huh?"
"Yeah," I say nodding slowly.
"Okay. Yeah, that's okay."
Hearing my phone ring from under that silver tray, I set down my tools.
"Excuse me," I say.
It was April. Calling for about the 4th time today.
"Sorry about that," I whisper and return back to work.
THANKSGIVING
Elena's POV
"Hey, I'm home," I yelled into the house.
Dropping off my things on the couch, Theo runs over to me.
"Oh, how is my boy!"
"Great. Aunty Mer made is cookies, and we watched cartoons in the morning.
"Whoa, cookies!"
"They were peanut butter, so they didn't that much sugar," Meredith said as she cleaned her hands with a towel.
"Oh, I called in for take-out a few minutes ago, Chinese and pizza will be here in a few minutes," I added before setting Theo back down on the ground.
"How was work? I heard you had surgery with Sam?"
"Yeah, it went really well."
"Uh, oh. That doesn't sound good?"
"I mean it wasn't bad. I'm just used to having Derek with me in my surgeries..."
"But you were in Cardio today, right?"
"Yeah, and Neuro. Addison, by the way, said 'Happy Thanksgiving'."
"I saw her and Henry at the store the other day. He's a really cute kid."
"I know...he's so chubby."
Feeling my hands vibrate on the counter, I look around to see Meredith's phone lighting up.
"They're calling again," I whispered handing her the phone.
"It's the third time, today."
Stepping outside onto the patio, she leaves the door open.
"Hey. Hey, You're alive." I hear Alex say.
"Elena and I are fine. The kids are fine, please stop calling." And hangs up.
