THE NEXT DAY

"Your limbs want to hold you up. Your lungs want to breathe. Your heart wants to beat. But none of them are any good...without the brain." I said as I walked around the Anatomy lab.

"Now, easy when you retract the ventricle," I whisper to Deluca.

"Like this?"

"Yeah, a little firmer. There you go."

Ending the class, Deluca and I walked to the Neuro lab on the 7th floor.

Nurses and patients walked around, getting their daily exercise for the day, while other patients were having visits from our Psychologist.

"So, do you have any new on Jade?" I asked as I was still looking at her files.

"Yeah, Wilson found her. Now she's waiting in her room until surgery."

"Good."

Zooming in on the medulla, I could see a clear path through the back of her neck where her V1 vertebrae and skull connected.

"Can I ask you about the surgery?" DeLuca questioned.

"Yeah, what is it?"

"Who do you think has the better approach, Dr. Avery or Dr. Shepherd?"

Glancing at him from my peripheral, he turns his chair over to me.

"Dr. Avery's plan gives me a clear path to the tumor but we could puncture the carotid, while Amelia's plan could paralyze Jade permanently. So, either way...it's tricky."

Looking through the files, DeLuca holds up Jade's scans to the light.

"What are you looking for?" I asked.

"How could she let this go on for so long?"

"Not many people know that they have a tumor in the first place, other's try to ignore it because they're scared."

"Why, you're a great doctor?"

"There's thousands of them and only one of me. Jade probably accepted the fact that she gigantically tall, and didn't bother to ask?"

Hearing a loud commotion out in the hallway, DeLuca and I take a peek.

"Where is Dr. Shepherd!" Wilson yelled as she ran down the halls.

"What's going on, Wilson?" I asked.

"It's Jade. She fractured her spine and we're taking her into surgery now."

Running down the stairs with DeLuca and Wilson trailing behind, I managed to beat everyone that was running with Jade into the Scrub room.

"What happened?" I asked Callie as she came inside.

"Jade collapsed on the floor, fractured a few vertebrae's in her spine. She didn't hit her head, but I'm pretty sure that the tumor got worse."

"Crap." I hissed and I scrubbed faster.

"Where's everyone else?"

"Jackson's just outside putting on some covers, and everyone else is running down."

"Is there a plan?"

"Nope, we didn't have any time."

"Okay, well let's get her ready."

Sliding my hand through the gloves Bokie had ready for me, another nurse tied my gown behind me.

The door slid open, Jackson, Amelia, Maggie, and the rest of the interns came into the room.
