THE NEXT MORNING
Parking just underneath the walkway of Theo's school, I get out of the car before checking on Eliza, who sat in her car seat playing with her plushie. Smiling as parents walked their kids to school, I walked around the front of my car just as Theo opened his door.
"Okay, so Grandma is going to come and visit you during lunch," I said, fixing his jacket for him.
"Are you going to pick me up?"
Staring into his blue eyes, I brushed a pieced of hair between his brows away.
"Yes, I will...you can count on that." I chuckled, kissing both sides of his cheeks.
"Good Morning, Theodore." His principal said as she waited beside the front doors.
"Good Luck, buddy!" I yelled.
"Bye, Mam." He blurted out, waving his hand in the air as he met up with one of his pre-k friends.
"Good Morning, Elena." Another mother said to me.
"Good Morning, Julia," I said, watching as she watched her daughter run into the building.
"They grow up so fast...next thing you know they'll be heading off to college." She whispered, saying goodbye after.

After beating morning traffic and the train that passes around 8:15 in the morning, I parked beside Bailey's car and headed to the back of the hospital through the E.R. entrance with Eliza sleeping on my shoulder.
"What do we have?" Bailey said as she ran over to the ambulance.
"A 37 year old, male. Hit and Run. Police said they will be here after they question the neighborhood."
Brushing Eliza's hair down, I made it past the sliding doors just as they rolled in the car crash victim inside.
"Good Morning, Dr. Shepherd." One of the interns said to me.
"Good Morning."
Glancing around the room, interns and other specialist sat around tending to their patients, when I noticed Alex and Jo standing in the middle of the hall staring into Trauma room 1.
"Hey, what's happening?" I asked them, but all I got was a still face and April's voice echoing out of the room.
"Hit and Run. ABC's are in intact, but he's hypertensive and tachycardic." She said, looking at me through the window.
It was Paul Stadler. Laying on the table with a large gash to the left temple as well as multiple bruises in his abdomen and chest. The gauze that April had placed on his head was already dripping with blood as his monitors beeped out of the room.
"What did you do?" I blurted out, turning back to look at them.
"We didn't do this?"
"Our card was in his pocket, so they called me. But we were at home and in bed...why didn't you hear about it?" Jo asked.
"I was taking Theo to school, my purse was in the backseat."
Feeling Eliza shuffle around my neck where her head was laying, I rubbed her back smoothly just as April starts yelling again.
"Can I get a hand in here!"
"Dr. Shepherd, are you coming into work today?" DeLuca asked.
"Um...yes..." I mumbled, still focusing on Paul.
"DeLuca, do me a favor and take Eliza up to daycare for me?"
"Of course."
Handing her over to DeLuca, he cradled her carefully before striding out of the E.R.
