~*Now*~

I stare up at my childhood friend with complete shock. His hand slides over my cheek lovingly while his smile widens.
"It's okay, Violet... Everything is alright. I'm here, and I'm never leaving you ever again." Josh tells me kindly. I attempt to sit up in the bed, but the restraints hold me down.
"Why did you kidnap me then? You could have just went to my home and spoken to me." I tell him while my brain slowly attempts to understand that everything I was previously told was a lie from my mother.
"As if Shane would allow me to do that... He doesn't even let me in his presence anymore. You see, Violet, I used to own all the compounds alongside Shane. We were friends, business partners, and I did it all so that we could share a life when I met with you again. However... After the outbreak happened, he took it all for himself. He pushed me out of it, and when I saw you go inside those walls... I never thought I'd see you go out of them." Josh admits, his hand stroking my face.
"Shane wouldn't do that... He... He wouldn't, he never would do that, Josh. Just let me talk to him, I'm sure there was some kind of misunderstanding." I gulp loudly through my nervous words and attempt to smooth the situation between Josh and I with my eyes.
"I can't let you go back to him, Violet. You have to stay with me, where I can always protect you." Josh whispers with his face only inches from mine and his breath sticking to me in a way that it did earlier.
"Josh... I thought you were dead, for so many years. Even if you somehow lived, why did you never find me and save me from my mother? You knew what a horrible person she was... And even now, you knew my suffering... Yet you still hid from me, and let me feel like I was alone. Whatever terrible things Shane did, at least he was there when I needed him." I whisper while shaking my head very slightly.
"Violet, he is not as good as you think he is." Josh tells me, his thumb running over my cheek.
"And how good of a man are you? Are you the gentleman I remember, the one that I would be happy to marry? Or have you changed from the person I wanted you to stay as?" I ask, just slightly raising my voice at him.
"Violet... People have to grow up, like we both have." Josh comments.
"But did you grow out of the person you used to be? I missed my little best friend, but if you're not him anymore..." I trail off while my eyes go up to meet those beautiful blue orbs of his.
"Here, if you want to talk to Shane, then I won't stop you. Just let me go with you, I don't want him to trick you anymore. Like I told you when we were little, I want to protect you, because that, and only that, is what you deserve." Josh whispers. His hands reach down my legs and pull the strap that had been holding me down. He loosens both sides and moves my legs so they are slightly bent and away from the bed. He then goes to my arms that had been above my head. He carefully undoes both of the straps and pulls my arms out of them and rests them at my sides. His arm slides below the small of my back where he lifts me from the bed and holds me in his arms.
"Thank you..." I whisper while I look up at him.
"You never have to thank me, Violet. Everything I do for you is my pleasure, and I wouldn't have it any other way." Josh tells me as he plants a small kiss on my forehead and his face goes a light shade of pink with blush. I giggle quietly at the sight, causing Josh to give me a confused look.
"You're blushing, it's cute." I comment with a smile and a hot sensation on my own face, probably blush as well.
"You are too... And you're cuter." Josh whispers as he begins walking toward a small, white door to exit the room. He opens it, now holding me with one hand, and pushes the door open so we may go through. Outside, I see my old home of the Main District. The streets are still broken, and blood splatter stains seem to be a regular sight while walking around here.
"Why... Did you being me back here?" I ask in a hushed voice.
"I'm taking this place back... This is the only place I thought was safe for you, since I can protect you here." Josh whispers while he begins walking down the street towards the front gate of the wall. Wherever we had been, it was behind the police station, and my old home. I was beginning to dread the moment when I would have to pass by those places and remember everything I wished to forget. The streets are empty, until a slim silhouette comes walking down the street and stops to look at me and Josh. I immediately recognize him and shake my head.
"What do you want, Kyle?" I shout while gripping onto Josh tighter than before.
"Violet... You're back? Is Shame here too? I have to talk to him about what I did. I want to take responsibility for everything my brother did, since it's technically my fault that he got out in the first place." Kyle responds to me nervously.
"You want to take responsibility? Then go die somewhere. Let the Eaters tear you to shreds, because that is what your brother deserved." I scream at him angrily. Kyle nods as he approaches us with his arms crossed.
"I'm really sorry tat he killed your friend, Violet." Kyle tells me, his voice shaky. I push Josh away from me and jump to stand on my legs that are still weak.
"He was not just my friend, Kyle. He was my soulmate, and it was supposed to be me hit by that bullet, and when my baby died, it was supposed to be in 40, 50, 60 years. Not this soon, not before we even got to live a life together. You apologizing to me doesn't help a bit. Because you took away my Jack, and nothing you say or do will change that. I will never forgive you, Kyle. And now you've just reminded me that my..." I sniffle heavily and wipe away tears that have now been sliding down my cheeks. "Get away from me, Kyle, because Shane isn't here and if you want to get the same fate as your brother, go ask someone to shoot you. Because that's what he got, and it worked just fine." I hiss while I push the slender child away from me and change my direction towards the one place that I want to be. Home.
