I sit on the couch while reading a book that had been sitting on the coffee table in the living room. The book is quite boring if I'm honest, considering it's a sappy love story called "Found You." I suddenly hear the com in the center of the living room table start to ring loudly through the mostly empty house. They guys decided to go out drinking, and Shane didn't want to go, probably because he didn't want to be seen moping in a bar with them. Even though all he said was "I don't drink," but we both know his real reasons. I grab the com off the table and answer it lazily.
"Hello?" I ask the other end.
"Shane?" The voice on the other end questions me frantically,
"No, it's Violet. What do you need?" I ask the com.
"I guess it doesn't matter. I just got a call from your district, and it has been taken over again. I have the man who called me on the other line, and he wanted to talk to you." The voice, who I now realize to be Allan, and gasp at his news. I jump up from the couch and dash towards the bedrooms. I practically bust down the door into Shane's room, causing him to turn to face me with wide eyes.
"What happened?" He questions me, looking extremely concerned.
"Someone has taken our compound." I say, almost out of breath. I hand the com to Shane and he looks at it with his concerned expression staying plastered to his face.
"Hello? Who is it I am speaking to?" Shane asks the com in his business tone. All we hear is scrambled static coming from the other end of the com.
"Hello? Is anyone there?" Shane questions, glancing at me while he does.
"Allan was there before, and he said that whoever was responsible is on the line." I explain, placing a hand on my hip in annoyance. Shane nods slowly and presses down the button on the com once again.
"Allan? Are you still here?" Shane questions. He is only answered by more static and a loud beeping noise that causes Shane to turn down the volume with a small dial on the side of the com.
"They must have left the line, I'll keep an eye on this though, just in case of-"
"Shane? Have I really gotten the leader of the compound on my first try?" A voice on the other end laughs deeply.
"Who is it that I am speaking to?" Shane questions, his eyes widening, I can only guess because he is nervous about talking to this stranger. Perhaps he thinks that we will lose someone else like we did with Jack. I would be lying if I said that fear isn't still haunting me, because I'm honestly still worrried that something similar will happen to everyone else.
"Oh, that doesn't matter now, what matters is that I own your compound now." The voice on the other end declares. This guys sounds pretty full of himself, but so is Shane, and he has good reason to be.
"I have already taken my compound back once, and I am willing to do it again. Whether it be by force, or by negotiations. I'd recommend the second option though, and if you're smart you'll accept my terms, because ethe last guy didn't and look where that got him." Shane chuckles to himself as he releases the button on the com.
"Yes, I've heard a lot about you, Shane and you seem like a smart man. But I'm smart too, and I don't go down as easily as a crazed maniac does." He speaks smoothly as if he had practiced saying everything beforehand.
"That's probably true, but I always win. You will lose to me at some point, whether it be tomorrow or in a few months, I will win. And when I do, you best hope I have a reason to keep you alive." Shane replies without any emotion in his voice.
"Your threats are pretty funny, Shane. I didn't know you could get so worked up over such a small conversation with me. I look forward to our next chat, Shane, and I'll take good care of my new compound while you're away." The com suddenly hangs up after that and Shane groans in annoyance as he slams it down on a table on his bedside.
"I have to go back." Shane says with a heavy sigh.
"You can't. We have to stick together, and we can't just... Have you leave us, back to that compound to fight someone else alone." I stutter while shaking my head at Shane. He drags his suitcase off the florr and let's it fall onto his bed.
"I can't just sit back here and do nothing while my compound is being taken." Shane declares as he quickly unzips the bag and begins shoving everything of his back inside of it.
"You... You can't just leave. Not back to... To that place! Because if you leave, then the only thing I'll be able to think about is that I'll never see you again, or when I do that you'll be dead! Just like what happened to Jack... And I can't go through that again! Not with you, not with Mark, not with anyone! I'm not losing anyone else I care about!" I scream as tears begin to create rivers down my cheeks.
"Violet... I can't stay here. I can't stay in a place with Allan torturing me when my compound is being taken right out from under my nose!" Shane shouts as he slams his suitcase shut and turning towards me. Only then do I realize that Shane also has tears going down his cheeks and that his eyes are beginning to get red and puffy.
"But you can't just leave me when I've lost everything else!" I scream at him and almost fall to the ground because of how badly my entire body shakes. Shane grabs my arms with his strong hands and shakes his head as he falls into arms.
"I won't die, I'm smarter than whoever this guy thinks he is. You don't have to worry so much, Violet, because I don't get killed by lousy terrorists." Shane tells me while shaking his head and backing up away from me.
"That's what everyone thinks, until it happens." I whisper as more tears flood my eyes and block parts of my vision.
"But none of them are me. None of them have fought their way to the top, and I won't let everything I've built crumble down. So, I am going, Violet, and I promise you, I'll be back here very soon." Shane says as his lips clash with mine for only a second. My eyes widen as he does, and it only lasts for a fee seconds.
"I should get packing, I'll be going tomorrow. I don't want this man to gain more of an ego than he already has, because an ago can make a man dangerous." Shane states with an assertive nod.
