I look at Lisa mortified that she's not hearing what I'm hearing, either I am crazy, going crazy or she's deaf.
The bangs sound like hundreds and thousands of drums are being hit all at once.
She stays quiet straining her ears to listen to whatever it is I'm hearing. Please let her hear the noise. We're both startled when we hear Drew groaning and mumbling incoherently. We turn to him relieved he's awake, as we try to make sense of what is going on.
"The banging make it stop." Drew says with a pained expression, his hands on his ears trying to block out the unpleasantly loud sounds coming from the front door. I look at Drew surprised, not believing what I just heard.
"You can hear them too." I whisper to myself, coming to the realization that I'm not going insane.
"You can hear the bangs." I say matter of factly and a little too loud as I point my finger at Drew. Lisa stands up from her crouching position and with her accusing almond shaped brown eyes and messy run through black hair, she charges towards me. For someone with a tiny stature she sure is intimidating.
"You're doing this, make it stop." She says angrily. She's standing in front of me breathing hard that I can feel her warm breath fanning on my face. I stretch my hands out in front of me so she won't come closer as I back away shaking my head no.
"I have no control over this, I don't know what is happening and I am just as confused as you are." I say calmly before she shushes me. I look at her confused and raise an eyebrow up.
"I hear someone knocking." She whispers to me. I've been so distracted that I forgot all about the loud bangs of knocks. I don't hear them anymore. I look at her suspiciously, she's playing mind games. When I open my mouth to speak I actually do hear a knock at the door. This time less intense, but still loud.
"Why couldn't I hear it before?" She asks me. I have no answer so I just shrug my shoulders. She looks down at Drew who is still lying on the floor before she exits out of the room to open the door.
"Hello sheriff Keiltskin." I hear Lisa say cautiously. My eyes widen, why is he here? I move closer to the door eavesdropping on their conversation. I could see both of them clearly from where I'm standing. I make sure I'm out of eye shot.
"Sorry to be interrupting this late at night. But Ms. Lisa Ford, we got a few complaints from the neighbors, saying they heard loud screams. Did you happen to hear or..." he stops. He looks like he's looking at Lisa, but his line of sight is directly at me. Lisa turns her head slightly noticing the sheriff isn't looking at her.
"Sheriff I heard no screams, but if I do I'll be sure to call and inform you. So if you'll excuse me." Lisa says as she tries to shut the door. Of course her attempt is futile and the sheriff waltz's right in. I stand my ground, narrowing my eyes. If he thinks I'm going to have a lovely conversation with him, then he is sadly mistaken.
"Ahh well if it isn't the young lady from earlier, didn't know you knew her Lisa." He rubs his beard and turns to Lisa. Lisa just curtly smiles and nods.
"Are you doing any better, sweetheart?" He asks. I can tell he doesn't actually care. I feel repulsed with how he just called me sweetheart, that I don't have it in me to answer. I nod and walk back into -what I feel like- is a safe spot. Drew is up now sitting on my bed, still watching me. Uneasy features etched on his face, waiting for me to have an episode again. Another rewind of what happened earlier when I first saw the sheriff. I look at him and nod signaling I am ok. I hear Lisa and the sheriff discussing more unimportant matters, when I finally hear the door shut. I let out a sigh of relief knowing he is gone. I don't know why this weird feeling overwhelms me whenever I'm near him and it's very distressing.
"How are you feeling?" Lisa walks in with a glass of water and hands it to Drew.
"A little light headed, but I'll manage." He says with a smile. Lisa looks like she's about to cry and goes in for a hug. I can't tell if they're lovers or just great friends. I feel like I'm intruding, so I turn and cough awkwardly. She let's go of him and smiles while rubbing the tears out of her eyes.
"Ok if anything happens call me, I've had a strange day full of events and I need to sleep on it." She says while walking out of the room. Although she seems like she doesn't care, she is more understanding than I thought. After everything that happened I damn well thought she'd kick us out, or at least me. It seems like I attract trouble and I have no way to escape it.
I'm so deep in thought that I forget Drew is still sitting on my bed. He isn't looking at me for once which is a strange, he's staring at the ground. He notices me moving closer and looks up. I let him process what just happened and wait till he says something. He stands abruptly, walks toward the door and turns.
"Tomorrow we talk. Get some rest you need it, goodnight." He says softly. He turns the lights off and shuts the door. I stand there in the dark trying to figure out everything that just happened. My brain is going one hundred miles per hour and any effort of me trying to sleep will be pointless. I walk toward the desk siting comfortably on the chair searching and hoping to find paper and a pen to write down every odd situation that has happened. The more I'm here, the more everything is fuzzy and is getting continuously confusing.
I huff out in annoyance, irritated that instead of finding answers all I'm given are more questions. So instead of hurting my brain further with possible explanations of who I am, I enjoy the natural light emanating from the moon and admire the woods and all the shadows the light gives the trees. I stare absentmindedly and for a second forget. I see movement but assume it's an animal, but once again I see movement. The mysterious tall figure is back, and this time I'm ready. I make sure everyone is sleeping. I can hear small snores coming from the living room, and I'm sure Lisa is dead asleep.
I get up and as quietly as possible I move the desk out of the way and crack the window open. I push on the window screen and it easily removes itself. Adrenaline is coursing through me that I forget about the cold and run to the woods. I might be running to my death, but whoever that black tall figure is may have the answers I need. That is all I want.
