I'm starting to think I'm hallucinating, every time Ezra leaves.
I walk back downstairs and into the kitchen, everyone already eating breakfast. I go to the cupboard and take out cereal.
"I made breakfast." Sawyer announces, annoyed. I ignore and continue to pour a bowl of cereal.
"I don't trust your food." I tell him, after I take a spoonful of my cereal. This time he ignores me and continues eating.
"Any plans for today?" Mia questions, and I feel her awkwardness. She should control her husbands bad temper and put him in his place.
I continue eating my cereal, not in the mood for anyone.
"I'm guessing that's a no." She says after no one answers her. I quickly slurp the last of the milk and put my dish in the sink and get out of the kitchen as fast as possible.
When I make it up stairs I sigh out loud, wanting to scream. I look under my pillow and smile when I see I still have the small dinosaur that Ezra gave me. The only thing that's making me feel less crazy, and knowing Ezra is real and not part of something my mind has made up.
I've read something about how our brains work, your mind makes up something from your imagination, and you start believing it's real. Usually happens when you're trying to cope with something that traumatized you.
"Estás bien? Are you okay?"
I jump, startled from the sudden intrusion and quickly hide the small toy behind me. I turn around to find Nancy, standing there, leaning against the broom she's holding.
"Yes." I answer her. She smiles, and walks over to the already made bed.
"Siéntate, sit." She says, patting the spot next to her. I look at her questionably and she gives me a stern look and I follow her command.
"Are you okay?" I ask, not knowing what she wants to talk to me about.
"You have to be careful." She starts and I scrunch my eyebrows, fully paying attention to what she has to say.
"Careful?" I question.
She nods her head agreeing with me, "The small boy, if Sawyer finds out..." she stops, and I see a tear slide down her face. I sit up straighter,
"What are you talking about?" I question, playing dumb. Her face turns serious and I watch as her hands shake when she takes a hold of mine.
"It's okay, I know you know about Ezra." She says. I nod, and ask the question I really want to ask.
"What happens if Sawyer finds out?" I question.
"Just know, Ezra is in the best care. He's having the best childhood and the time of his life. He's attached to you, but if he stays in here, I'll make sure he gets back to his room before Sawyer knows." She says, nodding. I try making out what she says, her Spanish accent thick, and I eventually understand. But I can't help but feel like this is a trap.
At least I now know I'm not going crazy.
"Is Sawyer really his father?" I ask, trying to get as much information as possible.
"Yes. He's top priority for Sawyer, until...." Nancy stops herself, and looks at me with a smile. "I'll let you get back to," She looks around, "reading." She pats my knee and gets up.
I wish she could have finished whatever she was about to say, but I display a smile, not showing one ounce of disappointment.
"Okay." I tell her, not bothering to ask her anymore information, I don't want her getting into trouble with Sawyer.
