"Where are you going?" Sawyers questions. He's leaning against the kitchen sink, his curls a mess. It looks like he's been up for a while. The blanket I let him use is neatly folded on the couch.
I don't answer his question right away, grabbing my purse and making sure I have my work badge.
"Work? Thought it was obvious..." I counter, giving him a weird look.
"I'll take you." He says and puts the glass of water down on the counter.
"No, I think I can walk." I tell him, already opening my front door.
I close the door behind me and breath out relieved. I make my way downstairs and walk out of my building.
"The car is this way."
I jump startled from Sawyers voice behind me and I see him walking to his car. I look at the bus stop and Sawyers back. It is kind of cold this morning, and waiting for the bus is a hassle.
"Ugh." I grunt out and walk to Sawyers car.
"You know what to do, right?" Sawyer questions as soon as I get into his car.
"Yes, why?"
"You just have a habit of fucking things up." Sawyer mutters. I roll my eyes, can't exactly deny that.
"Hey, wake up." I feel someone jolt me awake.
I stir awake and look around me. I'm in an unfamiliar office, sleeping on a couch.
"It's time to head out." A man says. I don't know him. Sawyers standing by the door, eyeing the both of us.
I stand up and I'm wearing a lab coat.
"You're going to want to suit up." I look at the man's badge.
"Alright Joseph, don't rush me." I hear myself saying.
"As your friend and leader, I want you to be safe." His tone turns serious and I feel myself agreeing with him.
"Expect you out there in five, Opal!" He shouts and I turn around and get everything I need.
"I don't want you going out there." I hear Sawyers voice and I turn to look at him. My stomach sinks and my heart aches. He knows this is what I need to do.
"We talked about this..." I whisper to Sawyer. He walks into the small office and shuts the door behind him. He watches me as I change into protective gear. I put my boots on and have a secret knife hidden inside.
"Promise me, you'll stay right by my side." Sawyer nuzzles his face into my neck and I feel him pepper me with small kisses.
"I promise." I push him away and grab my gloves. "Come on. People need us." I tell Sawyer and we walk out of the faculty we are in.
"Opal, you're with me. Pierce you're with team four!" Joseph shouts out instructions. Sawyers hold on my arm tightens and I turn to look at him.
"I'll be fine." I assure him with a smile and his hard gaze finally lands on me and he slowly lets go.
I walk over to the army jeep that Joseph is in and buckle up.
"How long will we be there for?" I question, getting a little nervous.
"You scientists are never brave." Jospeh laughs, getting one of his buddies to laugh with him. I roll my eyes and feel myself smirk.
"I want to see you brave, without those weapons you hide behind." I joke and Joseph rolls his eyes.
"How many times do I prove that I don't need a weapon." Joseph counters back and I pretend not to know what he's talking about.
"We should have you guys in and out within an hour." He reassures me with a smile. I remember his whole life Joseph was always wanting to save the world. So it's fitting that he's now in the army. But he's changed a lot. He's bigger and buffer, his curly brown hair is all gone. He seems more confident, his light hazel almost green eyes don't ever show fear and he jumps in to any action he can.
