SAWYERS POV:

"It's been a year, I think it's time." Evan thinks out loud. I lift my eyes up to him, and he sips his tea, reading the morning newspaper.

"You don't get to make that decision." My voice is low and full of authority. Evan rolls his eyes.

"This was your plan." Evan points out. I roll my eyes, plans change....

I stand up and look outside, admiring the morning sun. The small apartment we're in now is more cozy, Opal would have loved it.

"What are you thinking of?" Nancy asks, my attention darts to her for a split second before I go on admiring the city. The smile on her face tells me she already knows.

"It's Ezra's first day of school." I stare at all the types of people passing by.

"So you've been saying for the past hour." Nancy softly chuckles.

Opal is going to miss it...

"Dad. Are you taking me?"

I turn to Ezra zipping up his sweater, he's dressed in his uniform.

"Nie sądzę, abym był gotów pozwolić mu odejść." (Polish: I don't think I'm ready to let him go) I whisper, and Evan hears me.

"He will be fine." Evan reassures.

"Have you eaten?" I question Ezra. He looks at Evan and sighs.

"No quiero." (Spanish: I don't want to) Ezra complains. I walk over to him and bend down to his level.

What would Opal do in this situation?

"Why not?" I question, and wipe his hair out of his eyes.

His big green eyes stare back at me, contemplating what to say. He finally puts both his hands on my face and pulls me closer, squishing my cheeks together.

"Because I'm nervous." He whispers. I smile and pull his small arms from my face and hold them in mine.

"What's the worst thing that could happen?" I question and he looks around the room.

Is it possible that I'm more nervous than him?

"What if my teacher is mean? What if you forget about me?" He questions and I try calming him.

My heart sinks, why would he think I would forget about him?

"You'll be fine." I reassure him with a smile. His eyes widen in panic and I know he's convinced himself that everything is not okay.

I sigh and pick him up and I sit him on the couch beside me.

"You know I'll always be here, you'll be safe."

He stares at me and slowly nods,

"Pinky promise?" He lifts up his hand and I promise him.

"Now as for your teacher, I've never had a mean teacher. Once you get to school and see how nice she is you'll forget you were ever scared." I tell him and he agrees.

"Now let's go we're gonna be late." I rush him and he grabs his backpack and puts it on and rushes out the door.

"So touching, almost made me want to cry." Evan says.

"Fuck off." I mumble.

"You can't see her." Evan warns and I ignore him.

"I'm just going to watch. She won't see me." I reassure him, although I don't give a shit what he thinks.
