The gate was open, and now Evelyn was stuck with a hard choice.
She had to go in and find Nick, and the whole point of the mission had been to get to the laboratory. But now Emilia had shown up, and was obviously not leaving any time soon. Travis was in a terrible condition, and Evelyn had no idea if it was a good idea to move him. And it probably wouldn't be very stealthy to drag his unconscious body across the lawn.
And then there was the fact that Emilia was basically holding him hostage.
"Well then, what are we retrieving?" Emilia chirped in an irritatingly chipper voice. "I mean, I assume we're retrieving. You hardly have enough reinforcements to drive the 'hell hoard' from your home."
She scooped up Travis, slinging him roughly over her shoulders.
"Wait, your coming?" Now Evelyn was confused.
"Well, yeah." Emilia grinned. "Like a second home, this place. Sure I'll help. And then after, you can help me.'
Of course. There was the real reason. The real incentive.
That and the fact Emilia never missed the chance of a fight, which could be both useful and risky in a house overrun by demons.
Tapping her fingers against her trouser pockets, she drew out her phone. "Just give me a minute. I need to just make one call before going in, just to check something."
Swiftly, she dialled Nick's number, praying he picked up as the dialling tone filled the silence.
Too long. It was taking to long.
Then...
" 'Ello."
Evelyn furrowed her brow. "Who's this?"
"Who's this?" The voice repeated childishly.
Evelyn hung up, assuming she had the wrong number.
She went to dial again, but Emilia caught her eye, looking expectant.
Evelyn sighed. "Fine, I suppose I could do with your help. Bring Travis, and do as I say."
