"Hey, Mads." Nyx said quietly, settling down next to her, bottle of water clutched like precious gold in her hands.

Maddie looked up through her curtain of blonde hair that was obscuring her face due to her slumped position.

"Hey." She said, listlessly.

Nyx furrowed her brow, concerned. "What's up?"

"My mother's out there. She hasn't recognised me yet, but I saw her."

"Oh." Nyx said, realising. "... And you don't know how to... Face her?"

Maddie laughed darkly. "I've never known how to face my mother.
But in all honesty, I... I can't..." She broke down in tears, hand pressed to her mouth. "I can't explain any of this to myself, let alone her! I can't... I just..."

Nyx pulled her close, laying Maddie's head on her shoulder, rubbing Maddie's shoulder comfortingly.

"I understand. I get it. Trust me, I really, really do."

They sat in comfortable silence, mutually comforting each other.

Nyx twitched a smile. "Watch out, Luci's just come out the top, and she's acting 'oh so gratefully' towards our rescuers."

Maddie snorted. "Well, if you will try to grab her arm like that..."
She said, shaking her head at the faery girls very unamused glare at the man who'd just tried to lead her away from the hole, wrenching her arm out of his grip.

Nyx groaned. "Oh good God, it's going to get twice as worse within the next handful of minutes, isn't it?"

"More than twice." Maddie agreed.
"It's gonna be a whole..." She waved her hands expressively in the air, looking for the words, breathing out a frustrated sigh. "... Thing."

"Oh God. What do we do?"

"There's nothing we really can, except... I don't know... stay out of the crossfire?"

"Oh God!"

Nyx crumpled her face into her hands, rubbing her eyes with her finger tips.
"I just can't deal. I can't."

"By the looks of things, you're going to have to. They're already winching another one up, and we've got a lucky dip of two wonderful people to choose from. Lucky us." Maddie said dryly.
