Nick raced down the hallway with the kids in his arms, a mass of leathery wings and tearing claws persuing them.
Suddenly, a blessing from above, in the form of a room with a heavy door, a better chance of throwing them off than just turning down corridors.
Diving into the room, he dropped the kids not to gently onto the floor, practically throwing them into the room.
He slammed the door shut, turning the key in the lock, knowing it would need so much more than that. The door made a horrific crunching sound as one or more of the creatures threw themselves against the wood.
Nick pushed his shoulders and back against the door, spreading his arms to push back against the quaking wood, peering around the room with the anxious gaze of a rabbit in the headlights.
"Something large... Something heavy...""Bookcase!" Screeched Billy, jabbing his finger at the heavy piece of furniture.
Nick raced over, forgoing supporting the door for a few minutes to focus on the better chance of surviving the long-run.
He shoved his full weight against the bookcase, inching it towards the door, shoulder cracking ominously with the strain.
Billy and Rigsy, surprisingly, decided to pitch in, putting aside their general desire to drive him absolutely crazy to instead work towards their best chance of self- preservation by shoving against the bookcase with all the strength they could manage.
Progress was too slow. Already they could see the door splintering.
With a frustrated noise, Nick strode to the other side of the case, the side nearest the door. "New plan. Everyone step back."
And grasping the top of the bookcase, he yanked it forwards, toppling it towards him.
Diving out seconds before it struck, the case collided with the door, holding it closed at a diagonal angle."It's not going to hold forever. Help me move that desk in the corner."Nick said, the little ones complying for once.
Billy looked around the room. "So there's no other way out? Great, we've imprisoned ourselves. It's gonna be like shooting fish in a barrell for them if they get in."
"Let's just pray they don't." Agreed Nick.
