One word can do almost anything.
One word can make or break a deal, start or end a cause, win or loose a dispute.
One word can convey love or hate, joy or sadness, hope or despair.
But there was nothing, not one word, in the whole world, that could have had the effected Nick as much as the next word he heard.
"N-N-Niiick."
The hoarse whisper, barely audible, made him react in an instant.
"Rach? Oh my... Rach!"
He flew to her side, peering at her face, firmly gripping her hand. His heart leapt as he felt the pressure of her weak return grip on his hand.
Her eyes were open, open and clear, looking panicked like a deer caught in the headlights, but so very much alive.
Her lips trembled uncontrollably as she tried to form words, the sounds whispery and distorted, but still speech.
"N-N-N-iiick!" She called out distressed, trying to move her other arm across her body to touch his face.
Her movements were slow and uncoordinated, like she didn't have full control of her body, her arms seeming as heavy to her as lead. She tried to touch his cheek, but became clearly distressed when she couldn't coordinate her movements to reach him, just managing to brush him with the tip of her fingers on the fourth attempt.
Nick scooped up her hand, pressing it to his face for her, before clutching both of her hands together over his heart.
"Rach! Oh, Rach! I love you, Rach, I love you! I'm so happy... Rach!"
Evelyn appeared on the other side of Rachel's bed. "It worked? It actually worked? She's alive? She's conscious? She's not...?"
Nick's eyes shone with happy tears. "Evelyn, you're a miracle worker. Thank you. Thank you so much."
Evelyn couldn't help but smile a little, seeing Nick's joy.
"I still need to check her over. I can guarantee you there is going to be some problems. But the good news is, I think she's out of the woods on the turning into a Draugr. And on the scale, everything else is dealable."
