"Seriously Nyx, I'm not joking. However charming or friendly or... My God, guilty, he may seem, you can't trust a word out of his mouth.
I mean... You do know the things he has done, right Nyx?"

Nyx winced as Maddie grasped her wrist in a vice grip. "Uh, Mads? Not to detract from this important conversation, but you're about three seconds away from breaking my wrist."

Slowly, Maddie released Nyx's wrist.
"Sorry. I guess I got wound up. But still, you have been risking so much, do you understand?"

"Well, that answers the question of whether or not I should tell her we were sort of dating. Definitely not a good idea at this point."

"Yes, I do see where you're coming from. But keep in mind, he sought me out, and I decided it wasn't a good idea to refuse to hear him out, in case it provoked him somehow."

"Technically not a lie. At least for the first couple or so times we met, anyway."

"Ah." Maddie cracked a small smile. "So, basically it was compliance for the sake of self-preservation. Suppose that makes sense. Can't really blame you then. He was the one who came after you. It's not like you actively invited him for Christmas or anything!" Maddie laughed, trying to lighten the mood with a joke.

Nyx forced a grin, although it was more like a grimace. "Actually, about that..."

"Poor, poor Nyx. You must have been terrified!" Maddie cooed sympathetically, looking concerned, the former mirth lost from her face.
"But why didn't you tell the institute or something?"

"... And that's the kind of question I didn't want. Go back to making assumptions. I liked that. I didn't really have to confirm or deny anything then. Or ask stuff I can just fudge over, that's fine too."

"Um... It made sense not to at the time. Or... I thought it did..."

Now Maddie was suspicious again.
Nyx shrunk slightly into the wall, melting under her friends gaze.
"Um... Sorry?"

Okay, definitely need your opinion on this chapter.
Can't decide if this sounds like a plausible reaction from Maddie, even a highly strung, believing she's going crazy Maddie.
This page may get a rewrite at some point.
