Heavy heart

Nick didn't know if it was day or night.

He didn't really know anything anymore.

Was this real? Did he exist? Who was he? What was anything anymore?

He had no answers to these questions.

It had a few hours since Travis and Selene had taken the first shift home. They'd be back soon, possibly even within the next half hour or so, but to Nick it felt like they'd been gone forever.

His heart felt heavy, as if it were being crushed in a vice.

Rachel had been switching between screaming and thrashing in agony, to deathlike comatose, and he wasn't sure which was worse.

And the worst part was, the realisation that the damage was done.
Yes, somehow, inconceivably, it could apparently get worse.
But what had happened so far, had happened, and the consequences of that could never be fully erased.

Things would never be as they were after this. That life had gone, in a blink of an eye.

He'd stayed by her side the whole time, watching Evelyn do things to her he'd given up on understanding, all the while gently holding her pale, clammy hand in comfort, whilst sending a silent plea out to the cosmos.

Nick had never really been a religious man, even before he'd become a Vampire. But he was at the point where if it could grant Rachel any kind of peace, he would have gotten down on his knees and prayed in a heartbeat.

Anything for Rachel.

Evelyn looked at him from across Rachel's prone form.
"Look, go take ten minutes. Collect your thoughts, get some fresh air. You've been here for hours."

"I'm fine."

"You'll be more fine for a break."

"I'm not leaving her."

Evelyn nodded, a look of understanding on her face. "I get it. She's your family. When it comes to family, you've always got to have hope. Always."
