Distraction

Travis couldn't even believe they were trying this.

All it had been was a tiny syringe full, and now Rachel was screaming again.
As he sat a little way out of earshot in Evelyn's lab, having removed himself from the room, being unable to watch or listen any longer, he pulled his knees up to his chin on the seat he was sitting in, wrapping his arms around himself into a little ball.

"It'll work, it has to work. It just has to."

God, there was so much that could go wrong.
Angel and demon blood aside, there was blood types and cross-contamination and... God, probably stuff he didn't even  know.

"It's going to be okay. Evelyn will have thought of everything. She's a professional. It'll be alright."

"You're crying."

Blinking back the few years that bubbled over. His vision cleared to focus on the little blonde girl who'd come in with Nick.

He sighed. "Yeah. Yeah, I am."

The little girl giggled slightly behind her pink painted fingernails.
"Your eyes were all screwed up and squinty, making your face all funny!"

Travis scowled. "So?"

"Not a bad thing!" Wesley backpedaled quickly. "Just a teeny bit strange, 'cause your all growed-up an' your crying, which you don't really see grown-ups do. Not like children. Not that I cry, cause I'm a big girl! But all the others do, 'specially the little tiny children."

"Oh, really?" Travis asked, sounding confused at why the little girl was talking to him about this. Or even talking to him at all, really.

"Yeah, truly really. I look after the little tiny children sometimes, cause I'm responsible. Candace has to help  though, cause she's older, which is very 'nnoying."

"Oh, okay. Candace is... Your sister, right?"

"Yup. My big sister. Which is not fair, cause I wanna be the biggest."

Travis chuckled at the little girls sulky face.
"Yeah, but being the littlest is the best. Everyone runs around after you, and plays games with you and thinks you're sweet."

He crouched down to her level. "I've got a daughter, you know. She's... One, I think. And I'll tell you now, she's the bossiest person in the house, and she's only just learning to speak! Spoiled rotten, she is."

Wesley smiled. "Can I come see her one day?"

"Uh, probably. If you like."

The little girls face lit up. "Yay!" Immediately, she started babbling about everything she wanted to do when she met Abby.

Travis smiled at the little girls excitement.
There was nothing like the enthusiasm of a child to bring you even brief distraction your worries

Sorry it's a little late!
