Nyx blinked awake, looking around in bewilderment at the unfamiliar surroundings.
"Wha... Where... Wh... Huh?"
"It's okay, you're alright, your safe. You just passed out for a few minutes, from stress and shock mostly. Dehydration and lack of food, too.
I brought you back through whilst you were unconscious. Best not to hang around."Nyx turned her head, and saw Evelyn next to her.
"Uh... Where..."
"Madeline's here, she's okay. Exhausted, but okay."
Nyx nodded, still a little disoriented.
Evelyn handed her a water bottle filled with orange juice and a cookie in a plastic ziplock bag.
"You need the blood sugar. Trust me, you'll feel better.
Just don't make yourself sick. You haven't really had anything in nearly two days, and it'll be easy to strain your stomach because of it."Nyx nodded again, unscrewing the cap and taking a sip of the juice.
A warm feeling spread through her, bringing feeling back to her numb limbs and recovering her scratchy vocal cords.
She struggled a weak smile. "Thanks."
Evelyn returned the smile softly. "In a second, when you're feeling better, you can go see your mum."
Nyx nodded, smiling around a bite of the cookie. "That'd be good."
Evelyn took a deep breath, steeling herself. "Nyx, there's something you need to know..."
"Mum!" Nyx cried out anxiously as she rushed into Rachel's room, ignoring Evelyn's attempts to get her to stop, slow down, not panic, breathe.
"Mum? Mum? Mum!" She flew to Rachel's side, scooping up her hands, and kissing the pale fingers.
"Mummy! I love you. I love you so much."Rachel's eyes focused on her wide eyed, wild haired, trembling lipped daughter
"Nyx... My Nyx... My little bird..."
Tears spilled over, painting slow, crystalline trails down Nyx's face.
"It's going to be alright, Mum. I'm here now. It's all going to get better now. We'll make it work. We will. It'll be alright. It'll be okay."
Literally, about two pages to go until the end.
Honest this time!
