You took a deep breath and let air fill your lungs before you exhaled, trying to shake the overwhelming feeling of nervousness brewing inside of you. Your heart raced uncontrollably as you stared at the door leading into the Karasuno high school's gym and willed yourself to open it and go inside.
Your boyfriend, Tadashi, had invited you time and time again to come to watch him practice with the volleyball team, but you'd constantly flaked, saying that just the thought of meeting so many people at once might make you pass out. You'd been disappointed with the fact that you'd left your boyfriend hanging as a result of your social anxiety, so, now, you were trying to make up for it by forcing yourself to go and watch his practice.
You just wanted to make him happy, but you were scared out of your mind of having attention drawn to you when you walked in the door. The thought of everyone stopping practice to spot your intrusion and stare at you made you shudder. But you had to do it. For him.
You took another deep breath and held it as you opened the door slowly and quietly before stepping inside the gym. Once you'd entered, your ears were filled with the sounds of the players talking and yelling, and the occasional screech of skin on the wooden floor when someone dove.
Upon seeing that nobody had seemed to notice your entrance, you sat down on the floor, close to the door so that you could have a quick and easy escape if necessary.
As you watched the practice, smiling when you noticed your boyfriend get excited or perform well, you soon forgot about your worries and simply enjoyed spectating in silence.
Eventually, the coach called for a water break, causing the players to disperse across the gym in search for their water bottles. You saw your boyfriend walk in the direction opposite to where you were sitting, making you call out his name before you had time to think about what you were doing.
"Tadashi!"
You immediately froze when you heard your call echo in the gym when it fell completely silent. Sure enough, everyone had stopped and turned to look at you, including Tadashi, who smiled and began walking over to you. Before he could get to you, though, a few other players approached you and started running their mouths with seemingly endless questions. All the attention that you were getting was too much for you, and you ended up squeaking and running outside to get away from everyone.
Once you'd gotten away from the players' prying eyes, you felt your eyes fill with tears of embarrassment. You wished you didn't have such horrible social anxiety and that you knew how to handle yourself when you found yourself in a situation like this one.
A few moments passed before your boyfriend emerged from the gym and found you with your face in your hands, crying softly. He walked over to you and wrapped his arms around you, pulling him closer to his slightly sweaty and warm body. You immediately felt comforted and removed your hands from your face so that you could put your arms around him.
"I'm sorry about that, (f/n). I've just been talking a lot about you since we started dating, so everyone's been really excited to meet you," he apologized gently and rubbed your back.
"You... you talk about me?" You asked with surprise as you looked up at him.
"All the time!" Tadashi responded and smiled, "Why wouldn't I? You're awesome!"
His comment made you smile and giggle softly as you wiped your tears away. "Thank you, Tadashi. I really appreciate you."
He smiled in return and gave you a small peck on the lips before saying, "Come back inside; I'll introduce you to the team."
You nodded, feeling more confident and secure now that you had Tadashi by your side. When he brought you back in the gym, he introduced you to everyone and you soon learned who was who.
The two boys who had run up to you earlier—Nishinoya and Tanaka—bowed deeply to you and apologized profusely for overwhelming you.
"We're sorry, (l/n)-chan! You just looked so cute in your uniform that we had to know who you were!"
Tadashi watched you as you talked with them and laughed before Coach Ukai returned from his break and started practice up again.
He was glad you'd come and he was proud of you for finding the courage to do so as well.
