"Jaedan!" I heard echoing through the hallways. I turned at the waist, still walking to my locker. Niall came running towards me, a smile on his face. Excitement bubbled inside me, threatening to overflow.

"Hey," I said as he stopped next to my locker. "What's up?"

"I just finished the book in biology," he answered. I glanced back at him while grabbing my things for 8th period.

"Did you like it?" I asked him. I had been letting him borrow my Hunger Games trilogy. He nodded at me enthusiastically.

"D'you have the next one?" he asked. I nodded. "On you?" I chuckled humorlessly.

"Yeah right," I joked, shutting my locker. I stared at my watch, concluding that I had 5 minutes to get to class.

"You're a terrible person," he spat at me. I rolled my eyes, knowing he was only joking.

"Whatever," I smiled. He chuckled, looking down at the floor.

"Are you, uh, going to the dance tonight?" he wondered, looking up at me. My stomach flipped. Was he asking me to the dance?

"No, I, uh, have to be somewhere and I-"

"Here we go again, you terrible person!" he exclaimed, throwing his arms in the air. I laughed loudly, and I hadn't done that for a while.

I liked Niall, I really did, but I knew he would never like me back. I looked at him looking back to me and smiled, content with who he was and his sense of self-belonging.

"Why?" I asked him, making sure I still had time to talk to him.

"Well you could go," he started. I waited for him to finish in heavy anticipation. "And bring the final book so I don't have to wait over the weekend." My train of thoughts exploded.

For a second, a terribly, terribly stupid second, I thought he might have liked me. My heart dropped into my stomach, and I couldn't breathe, choking on disappointment. I thought he would have wanted to spend time with me at the dance, but I was wrong.

I felt my face contort in sorrow, and I turned to walk away. I pushed past him, trying to hold in tears.

How could I be so stupid?

"Jaeden?" he called, coming after me. I walked faster, trying to escape him quick enough. "What did I say?" He grabbed my wrist with a certain gentleness that I tried not to notice.

"What's wrong?" he asked me softly. I turned my head away, biting my tongue to stop the words from coming out. They did anyway.

"You only want me to go to the dance for a stupid book," I choked out, scolding myself for even opening my mouth.

"You think that-" He stopped, letting go of my wrist. "If I tell you the truth, will you promise not to laugh?" he asked me, suddenly sounding under-confident. His eyes met mine, and I calmed down abit, waiting for his explanation. I nodded, and he sighed.

"I just needed an...excuse," he said. I raised a tired eyebrow, just wanting to walk away. "I wanted you to come, but I didn't want to ask you straightforwardly." Realization dawned on me, and I felt the blush rising in my cheeks.

"Oh," was all that came out. So he did want me to go. My stupidity increased. I probably made him feel like such a fool. I didn't think about that right then though because I was too happy.

I beamed at him.

"Well," I said, trying to contain my smile. "In that case, I'll see you there." He smiled right back at me. I stood helplessly as he reached over and gave me a quick kiss on my cheek. My stomach flipped, but I concealed my emotions in front of him.

"I'm glad," he said. The bell rung, and he sprinted off, giving me an incoherent goodbye. I breathed in twice more, but then let out an inhuman noise.

Nothing could have been better in that moment.
