I ran across the street to the next block and up to my house. I threw down my heels and locked the door.
He never found me.
.
Or so I thought.
My lungs seemed to collapse at my stupidity. I broke down in tears for many reasons. A) I was so blind to think we would 'fall in love' in just that amount of time, and b) what Niall had done was just rude.
I wiped away the tears after about ten minutes, throwing my shoes across the room and shaking my head. I went and changed out of my dress, finally calming down.
At least it was all over, and he wouldn't be looking for me.
I opened the fridge for something to eat, seeing as it was only early evening. I realized I basically only had one drop of milk in the jug and sighed. I grabbed my purse and wiped off my mascara stains, making sure I looked decent for the convenience store downtown. I shoved on a hat for good measure, driving over there in less than two minutes.
I walked through the short aisles, stopping by the refrigerators to grab two gallons of milk. I heard the door open and a few voices, one of whom I recognized, the one who was talking.
Liam.
I quickly flipped around to look at him, hiding behind one of the aisles just enough so I could see him. He glanced around the store, shaking his head.
"She's not here, Niall," he announced. Niall walked into the store, and my heart pounded.
Could it be me they're looking for? I wondered. No, it couldn't be possible.
"Jaden knows how to hide," Liam sighed.
Well, now it's obvious, my mind warned me. For two seconds, his eyes landed on the spot I was, but he looked away, shrugging it off. I furrowed my eyebrows. Of course I had to hide. I wasn't anyone's Cinderella.
They walked out but loitered by the parking lot, talking and gesturing outwards towards the town.
I looked over at the cash register to see the clerk staring at me. She chuckled to herself.
"Sorry," I mumbled, putting the two milks on the counter.
"Ex-boyfriends?" she wondered. I smiled to make her feel better.
"Something like that," I answered, paying for my groceries. She nodded.
"Be safe, honey," she smiled, sending me off. I sat down in my car, keeping my head down as the light in the sky dimmed.
I saw the two guys get into the car a couple rows away, and I made sure I didn't do anything suspicious.
I backed out of the parking lot, inhaling slowly to keep calm. Niall didn't deserve to find me, and I didn't want to hear his lame excuse for making me feel so stupid.
I watched their car pull out behind me in my rearview mirror and my heart started pounding all over again. They followed me those few blocks back to my house, parking on the side of my road right next my mailbox.
I hurried rushed inside, locked the doors, and peeked out the windows.
I was being a little overdramatic, but I didn't want to see either of them at that time. Not to mention the fact that it was only an hour after the event. Seriously; give me some time to relax.
I heard a knock on the door and shook my head, promising myself I wouldn't answer it. They knocked thrice more, but I stood my ground, staring at the door like I could see through it.
"Jaden! We won't hurt you," Liam called to me. I furrowed my eyebrows.
"I promise," I heard Niall say. I took in a shaky breath, telling myself all of it was wrong but not caring that much.
I pulled open the door to see only Niall standing there. I watched Liam get back into the car.
"I'm sorry, okay?" he said, shoving his hands in his pockets after fiddling with them for a few seconds.
"That's gonna fix everything," I scoffed sarcastically. He furrowed his eyebrows.
"She was my ex-girlfriend," he explained. I rolled my eyes, knowing the explanation would be stupid.
But part of me wanted to believe him.
"And how many of those do you have?" I spat, wanting him to leave so I wouldn't be tempted to let him take me out to that movie we were going to go see.
He sighed, shaking his head.
"I never meant for this to happen," he whispered, thinking I couldn't hear him over the cars rushing by on the street behind him.
"Come back tomorrow, and we'll see about that movie," I said, wanting to make him go away, but infusing truth in the sentence as well.
He smiled softly, reaching over to place a kiss on my cheek.
"Thank you." And with that he was gone, but he stayed in my brain, haunting my every thought and action as I watched him pull away. I shook my head and smiled.
I just gave him a second chance.
