I walked into the store, hearing my stomach growl once more. Unhealthy foods would more than suffice.
I searched the local convenience store for a candy that I was in the mood for, humming a song. I heard the bell on the door jingle, laughs of a couple people following.
I knew that laugh. My body froze as I heard Niall laugh once more, harder than before.
"No way you hit him that hard," he denied. The girl laughed beside him.
"Of course I did," she countered. I quickly ducked behind the nearest shelf that was farthest away from them, sitting on the ground and pressing my back against the cool shelf.
Niall had broken up with me four weeks and six days ago. Yes, I counted. Why? Because I still cared about him. Seeing him there with his new girlfriend broke my heart and was extremely embarrassing.
They went silent, their footsteps echoing through the floor tiles.
"Something small, alright?" she said. I think her name was Brittany. "I'm not a billionaire." I rolled my eyes when he chuckled.
My ears registered how close that chuckle was two seconds too late.
I squeezed my eyes shut, but I knew I was caught. I felt my cheeks heat up.
"Chyna?" Niall whispered. I blinked, looking up at him as he stared down at me.
"Hi," I whispered back, almost being able to see my beet-red face. I breathed in and out, trying to find a way to escape that awkward situation.
"What are you doing?" he asked, looking slightly embarrassed. I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Sitting," I answered lamely after a few seconds. When he said nothing else, I sighed. My appetite was ruined and so was my day. I couldn't believe I embarrassed myself that much.
I pushed off the floor, standing up and pivoting in the opposite direction.
"Hey," I heard him say. I didn't want to, but I turned around to look at him. His girlfriend was oblivious.
"Can we start over?" he asked, briefly looking down at his shoes. I put my hand on the handle to the freezer, thinking.
"Friends?" he suggested, sticking his hand out towards me. I stared at it for a few seconds.
I really didn't think I could--
"Friends," I agreed while smiling and shaking his hand. Sparks flew for me, but they quickly died down as he let go, giving me a small smile back.
I sighed. I could never truly be friends with someone I was in love with.
