I quickly assessed myself in the mirror by the front door before opening it (outfit to the side). My prom date, Shawn, smiled at me. He was my ex-boyfriend -- because he was a jerk -- but no one else had asked me to prom.
"Hey! You look hot," he smirked, making me feel sort of disgusting. I smiled and nodded, anyways.
"Let's just go," I suggested, expecting him to take my hand or arm. He descended my porch steps before I could put a word in.
My parents weren't one for sentiment, so we skipped the pictures. Who would want pictures with Shawn anyway?
I got into his car, flinching when he threw me the corsage he had bought. It was bright blue, and I almost wanted to cry.
"Thanks," I sighed, trying to sound happy. We arrived a few minutes past seven, and I already wanted to leave. I remembered the only reason I came, and then I got excited.
We walked in, Shawn his friends, and then he was gone. I searched the room with my eyes, finally spotting Niall at the food table.
He was my guy-best-friend at school. We were pretty close, and he was hilarious. I was still trying to figure out if I liked him or not, but I was pretty sure I did.
I walked up to him, trying to hide my smile. I tapped him on the shoulder as he finished pouring himself punch. He turned to look, his eyes meeting mine.
"Hey, Kel-" His jaw went slack when he saw what I was wearing.
"Niall?" I called, waving a hand in front of his face.
"You look great," he smiled, meeting my eyes again. I hugged him, feeling ecstatic for the rest of the night.
"Thanks," I grinned, pulling away.
"I'll go enter our names in the raffle," he said, looking excited. I nodded, playing with my fingers.
"Just save me a dance, yeah?" he asked before he ran off.
"Of course," I agreed, hearing my favorite song start to play. I really loved dancing, so I found one of my friends, Angela, and had a good time dancing to the upbeat song.
Shawn found me when a slow song came on, and I cringed as he put both hands on my waist.
"I love this song," he lied, tripping a little.
"You had something to drink, didn't you?" I asked, knowing how bad he was at holding his own.
"Maybe," he shrugged, pinching my bum. I jumped away from him, pushing his shoulders.
"No no. Come back," he smiled, pulling me closer to him. I was forced to awkwardly sway with him, finally handing him off to some other girl for the next song.
I walked off the dance floor, grabbing a brownie, or five. I munched on those, seeing Niall standing on a chair. I waved at him until he saw me, and he smiled.
When he came over, he stole two of my brownies.
"Thanks, Kelly," he chuckled, nudging me. I nudged him back, hearing him laugh.
"After our dance, wanna play hide and seek in the hallways?" he asked me. I glanced at him, feeling excitement bubble up inside of me.
"You don't even need to ask," I smirked, earning a fist-pump from him.
"The raffle starts at quarter to nine," he informed me. I nodded.
We danced to two more upbeat songs, and then a slow one came on.
He immediately took my hand, and I laughed. With one hand on his shoulder, and the other intertwined with his and in the air, I felt like Cinderella.
"You're so cheesy," I scoffed, smiling. He spun me around, making me squeal.
"I know," he shrugged, smirking. We danced through the song, giggling like little girls whenever he spun or dipped me. The song ended, and he shot me this look of adventure. I let him pull me through the crowd, paying attention as he took me to the hallway towards the bathroom but then through the library and out into the hallway. I slipped off my heels, feeling even shorter than him.
"Do you wanna go first?" I asked. He nodded, starting to run away. I called him back, establishing some rules like a) staying on that floor, b) staying in the west wing, and c) only classrooms.
I counted to 100, smiling afterwards. I checked all of the classrooms, finally finding him in the social studies room under the teacher's desk.
"Hah!" I exclaimed, watching his face of defeat come out. He stood up, staring at something on the wall.
"Look! It's my dad," he smiled, pointing to some of the graduating photos on the wall. I stared, seeing how alike they looked. I noticed that my mom was right next to him.
"Do you think they were friends?" I wondered, glancing at him.
"Or they were just told to stand next to each other," he shrugged. I scoffed, pretending to be mad.
"Way to crush all of my dreams," I teased, leaning against the desk he was. Our hands overlapped, but I couldn't bring myself to move mine. He interlocked our fingers, but this time it felt different than when we were dancing or when he was pulling me along.
"I really like you," he suddenly said. My brain stopped thinking to decipher what he had said, but there was nothing to figure out.
He likes me.
"And what if I said I felt the same way?" I asked, not looking at him.
"Well, then I'd have to do this," he answered, staying still. I turned to look at him, and he released my hand. He instead pulled me closer by my waist, pushing his lips against mine slowly and softly. I kissed him back, relaxing into his touch. It felt so right.
"I don't even care about the raffle anymore," I breathed out when he let go. He chuckled.
"You're better than any prize," he sighed. My heart completely melted, and I pulled him back into me, promising myself I would never let him go again.
