I heard the door open and smiled, putting down my spoon and turning towards the door.
"Hey, Ni-" I started, stopping when I saw how drunk he was.
He hummed at me, putting the keys down on the table and throwing off his shoes.
"Are you okay?" I asked. my good mood killed.
"Yeah, whatever," he mumbled, making me sigh. The three of us, Niall, Riley and I, were going to have a family dinner at the table.
He walked off to our room, and I frowned. Riley ran in, smiling at me.
"Is dinner ready, Mommy?" she wondered, looking at the stove. I smiled for her, nodding.
"A few more minutes," I told her, and she she ran off.
When I had everything on the table but Niall's place setting, I called her back.
"Do you want me to get Daddy?" she asked me, blinking.
"No, honey. Daddy's too tired for dinner. He needs to rest," I sighed. She pouted.
"Okay." I hated seeing her upset, but I was, too.
We started eating our dinner; spaghetti and garlic bread.
I heard footsteps and tensed up, shooting my eyes towards the entrance.
"You're having dinner without me?" he asked, glaring. I parted my lips, but no noise left them.
"I'll get you a plate," I nodded, hurrying and getting his tableware. He never hurt me, but I didn't want to push his limits right then.
We ate in silence for a few minutes, but I felt like the food I had been starving for was doing nothing to calm my nerves.
"Daddy, can you pass the milk?" Riley asked, a spot of spaghetti sauce on the side of her face.
"Why do I have to do everything?" he shouted, slamming down the hug next to her plate. I watched her eyes fill up with tears, but before she could make any noise, I rushed over and wiped her cheek.
"Let's go get you in the bath, huh?" I smiled, making sure she didn't cry. I picked her up and put her on my hip, letting out a frustrated sigh as I passed Niall.
"Do you have a problem?" he yelled behind me. I winced, rushing to get to the bathroom. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me back to him with such force I thought I would break in half.
"Huh?" he shouted in my face. I kept her stare, trying to decide what to do.
"Wait in your room, honey," I told Riley, letting her down as I felt my voice shake. She ran down the hall, sobbing.
"Are you afraid?" he said through his teeth.
"Yes," I breathed out, knowing his emotions went haywire when he was tired and drunk. He sighed.
"Good," he said, letting go of my arm. I took three steps away from him, swallowing. He returned to our room, and I didn't see him again that night.
I slept with Riley in her bed, making sure she was alright.
I was woken up by someone shaking me, and when I realized there could be only one person, I was fully awake.
"Jada," Niall said calmly. I felt like it had only been a few minutes earlier that he had grabbed me. Riley stirred, blinking at both of us.
"I made breakfast," he said softly, reaching a hand out to me. I saw the apology in his eyes, and I slipped my hand into his.
"I forgive you," I whispered, watching relief spread through his features and him leaning over to kiss both of us on the foreheads. And it never happened again.
