I walked through the lobby, spotting the long table of breakfast foods. I smiled, listening to my stomach growl. Traveling all over the place was always fun, but it would have been better if there was someone who could come along. It was awfully lonely.
I grabbed a plate, looking out at the seating choices in the dining area briefly. I piled on whatever looked good, glancing up to find any empty seats. They were crowded with business men, teenage girls and toddlers who were half awake in their mothers arms.
I finished off with a glass of milk and scanned the crowd for a seat. The only empty one was to the right of a blonde guy who looked my age on his laptop. I timidly set my things down.
"Do you mind if I sit here?" I asked him, feeling terrible for intruding. He looked up at me.
"Oh. Go right ahead. This place is crazy," he chuckled. I laughed.
"Thanks," I smiled, beginning to eat. I was starving. We sat in silence for a few minutes, and when I looked over to ask him something, he turned his head.
Had he been staring the whole time?
I feel my cheeks heat up, but asked anyway.
"If you don't mind my asking," I started. He turned to look at me again. "What are you doing here?"
"Being a bit of a rebel. My parents want me at college, but I just want to have fun," he sighed. I could tell he only felt held back by his parents obligations.
"Yeah. I'm here for my job. It's sort of useless; I travel around just to see the sights, and then write about them in the local paper," I explained, realizing only after I spoke that he didn't even ask. I blushed again.
"That's not useless. It sounds like a great time. I would love to do that," he sighed, the last part quieter that the first.
"I'm...kind of...lonely," I stumbled. I thought we could be what each other needed. He wanted fun, and I wanted someone to share it with.
He looked at me, a certain pain in his eyes when he spoke next.
"I could never intrude in that way," he said nicely. I shook my head, smiling.
"I intruded on you," I countered. He raised an eyebrow.
"But I didn't mind that. I've quite enjoyed it." I blushed, looking down.
"And I wouldn't mind it either," I replied cleverly. He smiled widely.
"Can I?" he asked. I nodded, trying to hold back my excitement.
"When do we leave?" he wondered, shutting his laptop and glancing at the clock on the wall.
"Right now."
