My ex-boyfriend, Ross, was always nice, but it just didn't work. I had broken up with him two months before he asked me out for a drink.
We talked, and it was a good time, and I made the decision of letting him back into my life. We would see how it went.
"Promise me you'll be completely honest, and I'll do the same," I spoke, reaching my hand across the table for him to shake.
"Of course, Danielle," he smiled, shaking my hand.
"And, if we're being honest, I need to tell you something," I sighed, looking down. He furrowed his eyebrows at me.
"What is it?" he asked, leaning closer to me.
"You know Niall, from work?" I wondered, thinking they had met once or twice.
"Yeah," he said dubiously. I nodded, sighing.
"Well, after we broke up, he told me he really liked me," I rushed out, staring at him and waiting for a reaction.
"And?" he asked, staying calm. I inhaled slowly. "Dani?" I flinched, nodding.
"Well, he may have kissed me," I shrugged, staring at him.
"Horan came onto you?" he almost shouted, starting to get mad. I instantly regretted it.
"I kissed him back-" He stood up and flipped the table away from us, and I grabbed my purse.
"We're through. For good this time," I said through gritted teeth, stomping out of the bar and trying not to cry. I couldn't believe I was with that jerk for so long. He had some major problems.
.
The next day at work, I was stocking shelves, and I saw Niall walking by. Things had been kind of awkward between us, and I didn't want it to be like that.
The truth was, when he had told me how he felt, I realized I felt the same way. That's why I broke up with Ross.
"Hey," I smiled, watching him stop and turn.
"Hey," he returned, holding a few empty boxes. "What's up?" he asked, knowing I needed to say something.
"If you see Ross, come and find me, yeah?" I asked. He looked confused, but I knew how stupid Ross was.
"Or, better yet, just call me on line six," I shrugged, holding up the walkie-talkie from my belt.
"Why?" he wondered, glancing at the time. I exhaled nervously.
"Just...because," I dragged out, making him inch away.
"Whatever you say," he chuckled, walking away again.
I continued working, and right before lunch break, my walkie-talkie sounded off.
"Danielle. He's here," I heard Niall say.
"Okay. I'm in aisle 17," I relayed to him, felt panic tickle at the edges of my brain.
After a few seconds, I decided to try to find him. I heard shouting and started running.
"How dare you?" I heard Ross yelling as I entered the aisle. He hasn't seen me yet, but Niall's eyes met mine.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about," he stuttered out. It was the first time I had seen him look genuinely scared, and that scared me.
"You're dead, Horan," Ross growled, advancing towards him. I let out a shriek as Ross raised a fist and planted it right on Niall's jaw.
Then, unexpectedly, Ross let out a yelp, and I looked up to see an old lady with a can of pepper spray. She grumbled something to herself before walking off.
I rushed to Niall, seeing him in pain.
"Oh, my gosh. I'm so sorry," I panicked. "We need security and a first aid kit in aisle 17," I said into my walkie-talkie, still hearing Ross writhe in pain behind me.
"Are you okay?" I asked, putting my hand on his arm. He sighed, nodding.
"I'm alright," he got out, making me feel worse.
Security took Ross to the police station once we told them what happened, and the medic help clean Niall up.
After the whole thing had died down, it was the end of the day. I caught him at the door.
"Hey. I'm really sorry about today. I told him last night that you kissed me, and he lost it," I shrugged, sighing. He shoved his hands in his pockets.
"It's okay. And hey, my offer still stands," he shrugged, smirking at me for the first time in a long time. Before he kissed me, he asked if I wanted to try something more than friends, and I said I would think about it.
"Okay. I mean, I'm not really in the relationship mood at the moment," I chuckled. "But call me soon," I shrugged, knowing we had exchanged numbers long ago.
He nodded, smiling. I walked out of the door, feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket. I quickly answered it.
"Hello?" I asked, continuing to walk to my car.
"Is it soon yet?" I heard Niall ask. I turned around to see him leaning against the wall by the store doors.
"You tell me," I spoke, trying to hide my grin from him. He laughed, and I joined him, not having the slightest clue that he would be the one I would give my heart to.
