I sat down quickly on the bus, and my elbow caught the emergency window opener handle thingy. I hissed as it stung.
The dim light of the early morning, I tried to see if I had a scrape. I couldn't tell because it was so dark. I held my elbow in my opposite hand, clenching my teeth in pain.
As I pulled my hand off my elbow after a few minutes, I noticed it felt sticky.
"Hm. I must've been holding it for a long time," I thought to myself. I glanced down at my hand and saw it covered in blood.
My heart started pounding. What was I supposed to do?! I mentally screamed. I went to look at my elbow and I had smeared blood all up my arm, not knowing it had been bleeding. There was a large gash that I saw right as we passed under a street lamp. A drop of blood dropped onto my capris.
My eyes widened as I looked up to the bus driver and the first aid kit taped to the wall above him. This is not good. Every time the bus would stop, I thought about telling him but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I was too nervous.
The bus pulled into the school and I tapped my foot. I couldn't let anyone see me like this. If I had a jacket, I would've used it. I stood up anyways, still holding my elbow and walked off the bus as quickly as I could. I was almost running to the doors as a drop of blood slipped through my fingers and onto the pavement. I could feel that my palm was holding a pool of blood.
I looked down and stopped for half and second and somebody ran into me from behind. I turned around to see them. Ugh! People are so inconsiderate.
Niall. I stopped glaring immediately. He was one of the most talked about and sought for guy by girls in high school. I was lucky enough he was in my grade, and even in some of my classes.
"Sorry," he half smiled. He looked down at my elbow and hand. His eyes widened.
"Oh gosh," he awed. I sighed impatiently.
"Yeah, sorry. Bye." I quickly turned to walk away.
"Hey," he called to me after a few strides. I turned around again, anxious and starting to get a headache. I raised my eyebrows. "Do you want help?" he asked. People walked past us, occasionally staring.
I sighed, relieved. "Yes," I smiled. He smiled and walked up to me again. Touching the small of my back, he led me inside. I walked forwards, but he gently gripped my waist and pulled me to the left. I felt my heart pound loudly as the bathrooms appeared.
"Which one?" I asked quietly. He snickered a bit, still holding my waist. I watched another drop of blood fall to the floor.
"The girls' bathroom has stalls," he said, amused. I imagined walking into a full bathroom of guys. I shuddered lightly. A sharp pain shot through my elbow and I hissed.
He pulled me into the women's bathroom and had me stand by the sink. He lifted my hand off my elbow and put it under the water, massaging the dried blood off my palm and fingers. He then took a paper towel and held it under the water. He looked at me and gently began cleaning my elbow. It stung and I could feel the pain shooting up my arm. I felt tears welling up in my eyes at the intensity of the pain.
"Sorry," he frowned. After a few more seconds he sighed. "This is kinda bad. What happened?" he asked. I chuckled through all my pain.
"I hit it on the emergency handle on the bus," I said, smiling. A bit. He laughed.
"Nice." He smiled widely. I looked down and I remembered who he was. When I looked back up at him, he was concentrating on my wound. I felt my hair fall in my face a bit and he pulled away from my elbow.
"Done," he announced. I sighed.
"Thanks," I said gratefully. He smiled but quickly frowned. I did the same.
"What?" I asked. He smiled as if he hadn't wanted me to see.
"Uh..." he chuckled. "You got a bit of blood on your face," he said. He ran his fingers under the water quickly and then raised them to my face. He took his dry hand and pushed my hair out of my face. When his fingers touched my face, I felt the blood rush up to my cheeks and my skin tingled.
I could feel his thumb rub across my cheek, and he did it very slowly. He looked at me and a smile lifted onto his face. I involuntarily looked down at his lips and his smile disappeared. I started to lean closer slowly as he let go of my face.
I had liked him for a long time because no matter how many friends or how popular he got, he always just was himself. Everyone else liked him too, so what chance did I have other than now?
Just then, the door swung open. A girl walked in and looked at us. She was wide eyed.
"This is a uhm...girls' bathroom," she said. Niall nodded.
"Yeah, sorry," he said. His hand found mine. "C'mon. Let's get you a Band-Aid," he said, leading me out of the bathroom. When we were outside, I burst out laughing, and he joined me. That was super awkward.
We went to the office and got a Band-Aid. He put it on in the hallway and people stared. He was popular and I wasn't. It was an anomaly.
"There you go," he said. The ten minute bell rang and he smiled. "Gotta go, but I'll see you around, yeah?" he asked. See you around means goodbye forever. He started to walk away.
"Niall?" I asked. I started shaking. He turned around again and raised his eyebrows. "Can I talk to you in a little more private spot?" I asked. He looked around a bit, smiled, and then nodded.
We walked into an empty classroom and I closed the door. I inhaled once and turned to look at him.
"What's up?" he asked, shoving his hands in his pockets. I exhaled.
"I'll just come out and say it," I said shakily. He looked worried. I walked closer to him. "I like you...a lot," I said. I was glad I said it. His face stayed blank.
"Niall?" I asked. He looked down at me. He looked like he was about to cry. I was gonna go for it. I put my hands on his shoulder and stood on my tiptoes. I was about to find his lips when strong hands pushed me away. I watched his hands return to his sides and his face looked like he had just killed someone. Or something.
Like my heart.
"I have a girlfriend."
