The tapping of a pencil was all that could be heard in your room. The quiet sound echoed off the bland walls and reflected back into your ears. The windows were wide open letting the cool night breeze flow throughout the room. It was completely dark inside with only one dim desk light to illuminate your workspace. You were hunched over a wooden desk with five papers and a textbook. Your face scrunched up as you continued to look at the work that was in front of you.
How was a college student expected to finish this in one day?
The desktop lamp started to flicker and took your attention off of your studies. You rested one hand under your chin as it continued to flicker. Soon you found yourself peeling your eyes from the lamp, to the little black switch on the bottom, you sighed as you placed a gentle finger on the switch, turning it on and off repeatedly. You sat like that for what felt like hours before realizing that you've stopped studying.
A loud irritated sigh came from you as you hunched forward once more and stared at the paper. However, your eyes gilded over the equations and letters without your brain picking it up.
You slammed the book shut as you stood up and walked over to your closet. You flicked on the closet light so you could grab a particularly worn out blanket. Once your item was acquired you walked straight back to the book.
You wrapped yourself up as you sat back down and re opened the book back to your previous page. You mumbled a couple of things under your breath before continuing the tedious work.
"Having fun over there?"
You slowly rotated your body towards the direction of the familiar voice and sure enough she was there.
Symmetra was leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed looking at you. She let a smirk fall upon her face before she let her eyebrow cock up. You groaned in protest before looking back at you work.
A quiet chuckle came from Symmetra's lips as she walked towards you and your work. She leaned over you and rested her arm against your shoulder, her other arm glided quickly over your chicken scratch work.
"This one is wrong."
You blinked a couple of times before you looked back up a Symmetra, who gave you another snicker of amusement. You sighed as you took your eraser and quickly scribbled out the equation and started again. Once you were happy with the result you picked up the paper and gave it to Symmetra who was still leaning on your shoulder.
When she reviewed the paper she let out a satisfied hum before putting the paper down again. She then pointed to another question.
"This one is wrong too, you forgot PEMDAS"
You squinted at the equation and let out another groan, you scribbled your eraser and quickly fixed the problem. You slid the paper toward Symmetra once more.
As she was glancing at your work you fiddled with the pencil on you desk before the paper was promptly set in front of you, she quickly pointed to yet another equation.
"You forgot to carry over the X"
You couldn't take it anymore. You picked up the paper and crumbled it into a ball. Before Symmetra could protest, you threw it across the room towards the trashcan, it hit the rim before landing on the floor.
Symmetra continued to stare at the work that was just thrown away and back towards you. She took her arm off of your shoulder and crossed her arms.
"Well if you throw it away then you will just be making more work for yourself."
Symmetra didn't wait for you reply. She casually walked over to the trash and picked up the paper. As she was walking back she undid the ball and smoothed it out and set it back onto you desk.
You raised an eyebrow as she leaned against the desk, motioning with her eyes for you to try again. You furrowed your eyebrows as you looked down at your paper once more.
"I don't understand why I have to do math for an art college. I was never good at it as a child, I guess things never change."
You let a soft chuckle escape your lips, soon that chuckle turned into a long drawn out sigh, you set your chin rest on the wooden desk. Soon you found yourself drawing circles on the paper with your pencil. You didn't want to do the work, it just didn't feel right.
Symmetra gently grabbed your hand and picked the pencil up and put it behind her ear. She took her other hand and placed it on your shoulder. You moved your eyes slowly to meet her calm gaze.
"Y/n, you are smart. You just need to believe in yourself. Find harmony in yourself so you can push through the ruff spots."
You cocked you eyebrow at her little speech and looked down at the paper you had just vandalized. You reached over to the far end of the desk and picked up a spare pencil and started to erase the circles.
Once you work space was cleared away you focused all your attention onto the next problem. The letters and numbers filled you cluttered mind and drowned out any sense that was left.
It was just too much. You couldn't concentrate on anything.
You were pulled out of your mental state when Symmetra placed her hand on the pencil you were using. When you looked back at her she didn't look at you, she kept her gaze on the paper.
"If you add these two together, you can reduce the number of variables you have." Symmetra wrote with your hand clasped inside of hers. She kept the pencil steady as she guided your hand. "Then you will be able to divide by three."
The two of you continued to write like that for a couple of hours, even after you completely understood the material she would not let go of the pencil. She breezed through the study guide and finished the last problem with you.
Symmetra glanced in you direction after the worksheet was done and was greeted with a sleepy face and weak grin. Even with Symmetra helping you through all the problems, you were still exhausted from all the algebra.
Symmetra hummed as she gently closed the book and took her hand off the pencil, you could feel the heat dispersing off as her hand retracted. She placed one hand over the other as she continued to hold your gaze.
"I think it is time to get some rest, I am tired as well."
You could clearly tell she was lying about her state of energy but agreed with her anyway. She gently grasped your hand as the both of you walked back to your room.
Upon entering you saw that the bed was made perfectly, the pillows were symmetrical, the blankets were even, and not a single wrinkle was found in the covers.
You heard an irritated sigh from the hard light engineer when you disturbed the blankets and pushed aside the pillows. When you looked up after getting comfortable you saw her with her face scrunched up and her head slightly shifting side to side in disagreement. You let out a hardy chuckle before responding.
"What? You expect me to get in perfectly and not disturb anything." -you gently patted the area beside you for her to join you- "we're going to mess it up every night, might as well get used to it."
Symmetra unwillingly slid into bed as she muttered under her breath. She quickly slipped right next to you and started to relax.
Before the both of you dozed off for good, she wrapped her arms around you shoulders and pulled you closer, before you could respond she planted a kiss on your forehead before speaking.
"Comfortable?"
You giggled with amusement as you accepted her embrace and melted in her arms.
"Quite."
