Veronica and I continue to play, but it isn't a serious game. I remember Matt telling me once that Veronica is a very competitive person and can't play 'friendly' games, but apparently she can, because I don't even see a hint of competitiveness in her.
"You have a lot of fans." She laughs, but for some reason, it doesn't sound like her usual laugh. It sounds strained, forced almost.
The two of us are just passing the ball to each other and talking while our siblings build their sandcastle. The beach isn't as packed as it usually is, but considering how hot it is, it is busy. Majority of it being teenagers.
I've noticed the female attention I've been getting the entire time we've been here, and I know she did too, but what she didn't notice is the amount of male attention she's been getting.
And I don't like it. Not one fucking bit!
"Of course I do." I smirk and run my right hand through my hair, sending a wink to a group of girls who were passing by, causing them to giggle like little fourteen year olds.
Veronica rolls her eyes. "Cocky much?" She raises her brows and I mock hurt causing her to roll her eyes again but chuckle. She passes the ball to me and I start messing around with it a little.
"Why didn't you join the soccer team in freshman year? Why wait until sophomore year?" I ask and she tenses. I pretend I don't notice and just tip the ball up and as the ball comes back down I do an around the world before stalling it.
"I wasn't very confident and had other things going on at the time." She shrugs. Her eyes clouding with this intense amount of sadness and I frown.
I pass the ball to her and she catches it effortlessly. "I'm also very lazy and love food way too much. I knew that if I joined the soccer team then I'd have to stick to a certain diet plan, which sucks. When I did eventually join the team, Mason took it so seriously, he made a workout schedule as well as a diet plan and that was a true nightmare. He wouldn't let my mom cook for months because he wanted to ensure I stick to my diet. Matt found it the most amusing thing in the world until Mason decided to punish him too." She shudders and I burst out laughing.
I remember that time. Matt would complain every single day and would come to mine after school so he could eat. Once, Matt actually devoured three huge cheese burgers in less than an 20 minutes. The poor dude was suffering.
I also remember how he would complain about the hectic gym sessions he had with Mason. Apparently, Mason tortured him and Veronica at the gym to a point where the two would go home and ice themselves.
Well, it paid off on the soccer field so I guess that's the positive thing about it.
"How did you guys get out of it?"
"I think he got tired of all the work he had to do to ensure we stuck to our diet, so he gave mom her cooking job back. Didn't take long to convince mom to cook properly. Dad was on our side so it was a lot easier to get stuff from him. We ate take out for two weeks straight when Mason finally gave up the cooking job. Unfortunately, he's still ruthless with his gym training."
The two of us continue to share stories. I tell her how Emily is dead set on becoming a professional soccer player and she tells me that they don't know what Cole will end up choosing because he loves both football and soccer. She tells me that they think he might end up like Mason and choose football, but he's amazing at both sports.
From there the conversation switch to racing, our friends and somehow ends up on food. The conversation never got boring and we always found ourselves laughing. I had the ball, but was laughing so much that when I kicked the ball to her, I kicked it skew and a little too hard, sending it in the other direction from where she was standing.
