I honestly don't know why we decided to get in the pool because not long after we got in, we got back out to start eating.
While we were dishing, Veronica was in the restroom and ends up being the last one left in the house to dish food for herself while the rest of us sit outside and eat.
I'm in the middle of talking to Matt and River when I catch two figures walking out the back door and towards us. Looking up, my jaw clench when I notice who it is.
Kyle, River's cousin. The same Kyle that Veronica bumped into on her birthday.
The day I met Kyle, there was a small voice in the back of my head telling me I knew this guy from somewhere, but I was too focused on a very uncomfortable looking Veronica to still pay much attention to him.
And then there was the way he was looking at my girlfriend.
I've actually only ever met Kyle twice before. Kyle and his family moved to LA for his freshman year but him and River never got along so they didn't send him to Crenshaw because whenever the two were anywhere near each other, they would breakout in a fist fight.
It wasn't until our junior year when the two finally settled their differences and started hanging out. Kyle stays about an hour away, so whenever the two cousins hang out, they meet up at a bar halfway.
"Oh, hey, you came." River grins, catching everyone else's attention.
"Kyle?" Andrea and Matt both say at the same time.
"Hey guys." Kyle grins widely.
"Wait, you guys know each other?" River asks and Veronica, Matt, Andrea and Kyle all four nod their heads. "How?"
"I was friends with Tori." Kyle smiles sadly, looking at Veronica.
It isn't until Veronica sits down across from me that I realize there is no space open beside me and I fucking want to flip the table when Kyle rush to sit down beside her, a little too close for comfort.
Veronica looks up at Matt and gives him a pleading look and Matt frowns at her. While River introduces Kyle to Alyssa and Jordan, I keep my eyes on Veronica. She looks so uncomfortable that I just want to get up and drag the asshole away from her so I can sit there instead. Her shoulders are tensed and her movements are so stiff, I'm sure her muscles must hurt.
Veronica keeps her eyes on her food, not daring to look up. Whenever Kyle's arm brushes against hers, she'll flinch and it fucking pisses me off because Kyle made no move to move away from her and it seems like I am the only one to notice.
Then again, that might be because I kept my eyes on her while everyone else is busy talking around with each other.
"I'm getting a drink. Anyone else wants one?" Veronica suddenly asks, pushing herself up.
Jordan, Andrea, Alyssa and Zayn all confirm they want one and Kyle jumps up to help her.
"I'll help you." He says and her body stiffens even more.
"No. I'll do it." I say, leaving no room for argument. Veronica gives me an appreciative smile to which I return with a small nod before following her into the kitchen. As soon as we're in the kitchen, hidden from everyone else, I stop walking and grip her arm, spinning her around to face me.
"Why does he make you so uncomfortable?" I ask and she sighs, running her free hand through her hair.
"He was in love with me back when him and Tori were friends. After Tori brought him home for the first time, he wouldn't stop asking for my number. He started coming everyday in hopes we could hang out but I would always hide in Mason's room since Tori and I still shared a room. He also drunkenly confessed that he was in love with me, thinking that I was Tori."
