"Wilder! Get your ass over here!" I hear my coach yell after messing up again for the seventh time.
I let out a long sigh because I'm the reason we're being held back over time. I catch Matt's concerned gaze and clench my jaw as I turn around and walk over to my coach.
No one other than Mason knows about Veronica's pregnancy and that's only because, for some unknown reason, he was the person I called last night. I told him everything, about Veronica being pregnant and about my fear.
He understood me and didn't blame me for the way I reacted but told me I needed to get home and be with my wife and kids. Now, I wish he wasn't so understanding and made me get my ass home the second I told him.
If I tell Matt and River, I know I'm going to get the same reaction from them as I did from Mason and I don't want that. I don't want them understanding me because I fucked up! Veronica is just as scared as me. She needed me to comfort her and I walked out on her.
I walked out on her when she needed me because I was selfish.
"What's going on with you today?" Coach asks and I look away from him because suddenly Veronica's face pops up, but unlike the smile I'm so used to seeing, the smile I love so much, I see the broken expression she left with this morning with her cheeks stained with tears and pain and sadness in her eyes.
A knot forms in my throat.
"I'm sorry, coach. I-" I gulp down the knot and clench my jaw. "My head is somewhere else right now."
"Everything okay?" He asks, frowning in concern and I force a nod.
"Yeah. Just got in fight with my wife this morning." He winces when I say this. Coach looks over my shoulder at the rest of my teammates continuing with practice and lets out a sigh before nodding.
"Everyone, cool down and then hit the showers. Practice is over!" Coach yells after blowing his whistle to get everyone's attention. He looks over at me again and I gulp. "Go join your team. Tomorrow I expect to see you in better condition." He demands and I nod.
"Yes, coach." I say, relieved to know it's finally over. He gives me one last look before turning around and walking away. I let out a long sigh, tilting my head back before joining the rest of my team who is probably mad at me right now seeing as it's my fault we're still here when we're supposed to be finished two hours ago.
As we're all jogging to cool down, Matt and River comes over to me and tries asking what's wrong but I brush it off as me just being tired. I can tell they don't believe me but I honestly don't care right now. The only thing I care about right now is fixing things with my wife.
After taking a shower and getting dressed, I call out a quick goodbye and rush to my car. I send Veronica a quick text to let her know I'll pick the boys up and she responds with a plain "Okay." I then let Mason know I'm about to pick up the boys and that I can get the two girls too.
Soccer has always been my escape. When Veronica and I used to get into arguments, soccer was what would calm me down, clear my head, and allow me to start thinking straight again, but like I said before, all our other arguments were all easily fixable.
This? This isn't a silly argument. My marriage is on the line and I can't just pretend what happened didn't happen because it did and I caused that.
I was wrong to think practice would distract me from my problems because this isn't something I need a distraction from. This is something I need to fix as soon as possible or I could lose her again. The last time she broke up with me was because she thought I chose Tessa over her. This time she could break up with me for something a whole lot bigger and I might not be lucky enough to win her back again.
