Chapter XVIII
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts – Winston Churchill
I chug my beer and grab another one and start telling him the whole story. It all started with my trial after the police station incident in Mexico. Two weeks had passed by after I buried my daughter, her mom, and my fiancé. A.B, Kevin, Lawrence, and Marcus went back to their posts. Fito and Drew stayed in Eagle Pass, Tx. And Daniel came back to Dallas with me. When I dropped him off, I went home to pick up my girls and my mom got on my case because it was all over the Spanish channel about what happened.
"Nicholas que estabas pensado? Sabes que tantos problemas vas a tener con el gobierno Mexicano y el ejército de acá?" She yells at me.
"Ana, está bien. Muy padrino hizo todo para que nadie supiera que fui yo. Chuy dijo que el iba ser todo lo posible para que no estuviera conectado con lo que pasó." I reply.
She sighs and tells me that if I was ok, that everything would be alright. I then tell her about what happened in Piedras Negras. And she starts to cry because Genesis passing away.
"Mi niña preciosa. Mi chiquita. Nunca voy a poder abrazarla de nuevo mijo." She says.
"Yo sé ama. No tú ni yo," I say.
She walks up to me and slaps me in the face. I stand there and take it. Ayeka and Melfina walk in and come running to me and are happy to see me.
"Papi! Llegaste!" They yell.
I get on one knee and hold them tightly. I tell them about how mommy went to heaven and how she'll be watching over them now. They are too young to understand, so they don't cry, they just look at me confused but I give them a smile and a big hug, and they hug me back.
"Mijo to see eye no es el tiempo adecuado para decirte esto. Pero tengo el cáncer muy avanzado y los doctores dicen que nomás tengo un año para vivir. Dicen que ya es muy tarde para mí y que me prepare." She says.
I just look at her and then hug her and tell her that it will be ok, that we'll figure it out.
She starts to cry and says, "Gracias mi niño precioso."
I stay another week and hire a house helper to help my mom with her, my girls, my niece, and my nephew. Unfortunately, my sister was on too much dope that she tried to leave them at a fire station because she blamed her kids, for not having a childhood. But it wasn't their fault. She always wanted to do what she wanted and never listen to anyone. That's why she got pregnant at 14 and at 18. So, my mom took them in when the kids were still little.
I flew back to my post at Benning and I was told to see the commander because he wanted to speak to me. When I walk to his office, I knock on the door and ask if he wanted to see me. He replies with a yes and tells me to sit down and shut the door.
"Nicholas, it has been brought to my attention that you have been getting into trouble in Mexico." He states.
"Trouble sir? What kind of trouble?" I ask.
He starts telling to lose the dumb act and tells me about me killing a cartel boss and how I attacked a police station in Mexico and how there was speculation about my involvement with a vigilante group comprised of military and civilian people to help me also kill a captain of a Mexican police force.
"Sir, I have no knowledge of what you speak of sir. I went on leave to see my daughter and she was murdered because of my brother in laws job." I state.
"And what does your brother in law do exactly, son?" He asks.
"Sir, he was a Mexican journalist and wrote for the Mexican newspaper. He was involved with some of the drug cartels and the corrupt police over there, sir." I reply.
