Pat

Classes started, and I found my seat in English. Usually, Pax and I have a class together, but he was behind because of what happened last year. I sat there as someone sat down next to me. I looked to see Sam, fantastic.

I got up and found a different seat far away from Sam. It didn't work because he moved to a position next to mine.

"Will keep following me if I change seats?" I questioned.

Sam looked at me. "Yep," he said.

I groaned inwardly. I didn't need this shit. I went to get up, but the professor came in and started class.

"Welcome class, this is creative writing. This semester you will write a piece on personal experience. You will create a story and include details from your life," the professor explained.

"Why can't we write a piece of fiction?" Another student asked.

"Good questioned. Anyone can write fiction, using proper grammar and structure, but when the person writes this way, the person leaves out an important element, which is human emotion. For a reader to connect with a story, they must connect with the characters," the professor answered.

"What about writing what we know?" A guy asked.

"What do you know?" The professor asked.

Everyone looked at the professor.

"Do you know about relationships?" The professor asked.

"Yeah," the guy answered.

"Okay, but do you understand the different relationships? What kind of relationship? Is it family or romantic? Do you understand the other people involved, or do you assume?" The professor questioned.

Everyone looked at each other.

"That's the difference between writing what you know and understanding it. You," the professor said, pointing to me.

"Me?" I asked, pointing to myself.

"Well, you are the one I chose. Do you have a family?" The professor asked.

"Yeah," I answered.

"Pick a family member and tell us about that person," the professor instructed.

"My brother, Paxton. Pax is my twin, who's younger than me by two minutes," I said.

"Okay, tell us about Paxton," the professor said.

"Paxton worries about people and approval because he has anxiety. He has a tender heart that he hides because he doesn't want to disappoint people. What people don't see is that Pax's funny and honest. He enjoys sketching because of our grandpa Nash. Pax will fight back when pushed and let no one hurt me," I explained.

"Why is that? Why won't Paxton let anyone hurt you?" The professor asked.

"Because he's my brother, and we have this bond. We feel a need to help each other and take care of each other. I can't imagine my life without Pax or my other brothers," I answered.

"What this student said about his brother, did it make you connect with his brother?" The professor asked.

The class thought about it.

"Do any of you have siblings? Raise your hands," the professor instructed.

Most of the class raised their hands, including Sam.

"Okay, so you understand what it's like to have that bond with your sibling. This student explained it," the professor mentioned.

The class nodded.
