I relented and invited Sam over so that we can work on the assignment together. We sat down on the couch, and Sam took out his notebook.
"Okay, so, what should our paper be?" I asked.
"I have an idea," Sam said.
I looked at Sam.
"How about we write about how a parent interferes with their child's relationship?" Sam asked.
I arched an eyebrow.
"Think about it. The story will have all the elements along with human emotion, which is the criteria of the assignment," Sam reasoned.
"Do you understand this topic?" I questioned.
"Yep," Sam answered.
"Okay, smartass, give it your best shot," I remarked. I'm curious to see what Sam writes.
I sat there as Sam started writing and waited. It took a few minutes, but Sam finished, then read to me what he wrote.
Jason strolled through the school hallways with a reputation that proceeded him. He didn't care what people thought about him and kept most people at arm's length. It's not that he didn't want to get close, but he felt that people would see the tenderness that existed if he opened his heart.
The only person Jason allowed to see that hidden feature was his friend Clare. Clare wasn't like most people. Her personality was unique and enticing. She had an infectious laugh that made you chuckle. Her lips curled into a mischievous manner when she was deep in thought. Jason knew Clare was planning something humorous. That's why they were friends.
But like most friendships, their relationship developed further with affection. It was something they understood with each other that others didn't know about them. Both shared inside jokes, making them connect differently than most people.
This closeness didn't sit well with Clare's parents, who forbade them to see each other. Clare's father raged at the thought of a relationship developing, making Clare choose Jason over her family.
"You don't understand," Clare wailed.
"No! You don't understand. We will never welcome Jason here. You make a choice, your family or Jason," Clare's father growled.
Claire furrowed her brows as tears escaped her eyes, falling down her cheeks. How do you choose the love of your family over someone that holds your heart? An ache filled her chest as she stood there, clenching her shirt.
It was a decision Clare would make that will tear her life apart. A decision she didn't want to make but had no choice.
Sam finished reading what he wrote, and I furrowed my brows.
"So, yeah, I thought we could go with that angle," Sam said, clearing his throat.
"You sound like you went through it," I mentioned.
"Something like that," Sam mumbled.
"Did you love the girl?" I questioned.
Sam looked at me and gulped. I looked at him with curiosity.
"Uh, nope," Sam answered.
"Was it a guy?" I asked.
Sam shifted in his seat while I waited for an answer.
"You know, maybe this topic is a terrible idea," Sam said, gathering his stuff quickly.
What? Sam grabbed his stuff and got up, hurrying to the door. I went after him. He opened the door, and I closed it.
