Kaylee

I put things into boxes as I packed. Someone knocked on my bedroom door as I looked at Dad. He walked into the bedroom.

"Are you all set?" Dad asked me.

"I think so," I answered.

Dad looked at me. "You will make David proud," Dad said.

"I know. David is the reason I decided to become a paramedic," I reasoned.

"Are you sure you want to leave, honey? You can train close to home," Dad suggested.

I looked at my dad dressed in his paramedic uniform. "I don't want special treatment. If people knew that the chief is my dad, they would treat me differently," I reasoned.

Dad nodded.

"So, how are the recruits doing?" I asked.

"I have this probie that shows up late and can't get it together. I'm reassigning the recruit to another firehouse," Dad answered.

"Maybe you expect too much," I reasoned.

"You sound like David," Dad reminded me.

"Give the guy a chance. He might surprise you. Plus, after I finish my training, I will return to work at the station with you. Then, I can work with your probie," I reasoned, smirking.

Dad chuckled as I grabbed my stuff, and he helped me take it to the car. I'm training at another station, then joining Dad's team. Dad told us about his recruits. Dad mentioned the girl seemed promising, but he doubted the guy.

David and I would tease Dad about it. It was a running joke with us. Then came that fateful night when I was on a ride-along. A call came over the radio regarding an accident. We took the call and found out it was David. He was working a shift and on his way to a call. A semi-truck slammed into his rig because the truck driver exceeded his hours on the road.

It was the worst night of my life. I promised David that I would continue my training and become the best paramedic. I intend to keep my promise.

I pulled up to the station and grabbed my stuff. I met with the lieutenant, and he showed me around it. I would spend the summer finishing my training, then become a certified paramedic. I can't wait.

The school year ended, and we packed. Britt was returning with us. Sam was staying at school and taking summer courses, while Nora stayed to work at the hotel. We took the summer off except for Presley and Eliza, who worked on completing their certification course.

We packed up the cars and made our way home. All I wanted to do when we got there was sleep. This year was crazy, and it was good to have the downtime. It took us three hours to return home.

When we got home, we hugged our parents. We missed them as much as they missed us. We took our bags to our bedrooms. I crawled onto my bed and crashed.

My brothers saw me and laughed. Yeah, I'm not ashamed to admit that I missed my bed or sleep. Britt joined me and cuddled up to me as we slept.

Presley

As my brothers took the summer off, I didn't. Eliza and I continued our training when we got home. Next year, I want to prove to Chief Hayes that I could do the job. I didn't understand why he rides my ass consistently?

Uncle Cayson explained that it's our superior's job to make sure we do our job or people die. I trusted Uncle Cayson since he spent years working as a paramedic.

I reported to the station and did everything the job entailed. Our training comprised testing and field action. The timing was crucial for us on the job. We had to make it to the call quickly and stay professional.

Eliza trained with female paramedics while I trained with males. Eventually, we would work together unless we got a station at different firehouses. That also meant staying at the firehouse. When a call came in, we dressed quickly and left for it.

I have a feeling this summer will end with unexpected results.

Every day, I trained and worked side by side with experienced paramedics. The tests were brutal, with all the terminology you have to know. I studied my ass off for every test, including field tests.

At the end of summer, I will become an official paramedic and attending courses at Saintwood College, then joining Dad's team.

"Hayes let's go," someone ordered me as I ran downstairs and climbed into the back of the rig.

A call came in on an accident. We were on our way to the scene. I took deep breaths and remembered what David told me.

"Never let the crew see you rattle. Keep your head, because one mistake will cost someone their life," David told me.

I nodded.

"Kaylee, you got this," David assured me.

"What if I mess up?" I asked.

"Don't think like that. Everyone is nervous during training, but we save people's lives. Plus, you come from a lineage of paramedics," David said, grinning.

I chuckled.

"Kaylee, our legacy is saving lives. One day, you will understand what that means," David told me.

I nodded.

I smiled at that memory. David had confidence in me when I didn't, which he got that from Dad. I won't let you down, big brother.

Presley

Eliza and I took our last test, passing and becoming certified. The station had a ceremony, presenting our certifications. My family acted like a bunch of nuts when I accepted my paper.

After the presentation, I walked over to my family.

"Well, little brother, it looks like we will work side by side," Parker mentioned.

"Yep," I said.

"So, what now?" Payton asked me.

"Eliza and I are returning in the fall to continue with classes and training," I answered as Eliza walked over to me.

I pulled Eliza into a kiss, and my family congratulated her.

"This moment calls for a celebration before you all return to school," Pops announced. We yelled as he rolled his eyes.

Pops and Ma planned a party to celebrate our achievement since we have some time before returning to school. I didn't know that something significant was coming our way. It will be a defining moment in our family.
