Pat
After what Britt, Sam, and Nora's dad did to Nora, Britt stopped hiding her actual identity with people. Jesse and Skylar's family help the three of them live a life without fear. I can't say that I didn't see this coming. Their dad was crazy in every aspect.
Britt and I went to class and sat next to each other. We were partners. The professor came in and started class.
"Today, I want to try an exercise with everyone. Look around the room at your classmates," the professor instructed.
We looked at everyone in the classroom.
"Now, you all see different genders, skin colors, ethnic backgrounds, and so forth. We all come in different shapes and sizes, making us unique. It's the same with characters. Our characters drive a story and add depth to it. Most people make the mistake of writing a character that looks unrealistic. You come down to the front," the professor said, pointing at me.
I got up from my seat and made my way down to the teacher. I stood in front of the class.
"How tall are you?" The professor asked.
"Five foot six," I answered.
"Weight?" He asked.
"One hundred and sixty-five pounds," I replied.
"Okay, so you're not a tall, muscular guy with a billion tattoos," the professor mentioned, making the class laugh.
"I have a few tattoos, but not a lot," I mentioned.
"Do you have a girlfriend?" The professor asked.
"Yep," I answered.
"Was it love at first sight? Did you look at her and say, I love this girl? She is my genuine love," the professor questioned.
"No, we started as friends, then she stood me up on our first date," I replied.
Britt giggled.
"See, love happens at different times. Most people write a story with these key elements, which are cliche. That scenario doesn't happen in actual life. Couple's fight, makeup, fight some more, tease each other, and let emotions fly. Emotions aren't logical, and people respond," the professor explained, then let me go back to my seat.
I sat down next to Britt.
"I want you to write a description of your partner, explaining details about them. Pick interesting concepts and let your imagination soar. Do not write that my partner is tall, beefy, dark-skinned, who's part of the thug life," the professor joked, making us laugh.
"Show us things about your partner. Here is an example. Brad hit the gym frequently. He focused on different aspects of his body to provide the sculpted look that he hopes to achieve. Sweat glistens over his body, revealing the cuts in his toned arms and torso. Brad hoped one day, he would make the cover of a fitness magazine, hoping to reveal the extra hours he spent grunting on the machines," the professor explained.
Why do I imagine some dude named Brad at a gym? I looked at Britt, who's drooling. I rolled my eyes.
I started writing and described Britt. It wasn't difficult, considering I noticed different details about her. I used most of the hour drafting a paper; then, I gave the piece of paper to the professor at the end of class. We left class and walked down the hallway.
"This class differs from what I expected," Britt mentioned.
"I like it. Most teachers want you to spew verbatim back to them, but this teacher makes you think," I said.
