Chapter 2

I wake up in the morning, and take a short, warm shower. I'm not really nervous right now about the Choosing Ceremony. I think that Olivia is the most worried about it out of the three of us.

I walk to my closet and pick out the one of my many black t-shirts, and a black pair of leggings. I put on my black combat boots, and get dressed. When I'm done, I grab my jacket and walk to the stairwell. I trudge downstairs, then look around in the kitchen. There's not really anything to eat. I frown when my father comes in. "Dining Hall again?" He asks and I nod.

I sit on the edge of one of the counters, swinging my legs in the air. I think about what initiation could be like if I choose Dauntless. I remember last year, when Ashton's brother ranked first. Ashton's brother must be quiet or something, because every time I was over at his house with all of our friends, his brother couldn't be heard.

None of us really know him. He's like some type of mystery. I walk out into the living room, where Alex sits. His nose is red, and his lips are chapped. His skin is pale, so I'm guessing that he's still sick.

That's when Olivia and Hunter come downstairs. Olivia and Hunter are followed by my parents, who smile at all of us. "I guess I'll see at least one of the three of you back here later." My mother says, then hugs us. Everyone hugs each other, and I smile.

How could I ever dream of leaving this place?

Soon, we all stand on the train, on our way to the Hub, where the ceremony will take place. My father stands at the opening of the train car, along with Zeke. Shauna and my mother talk quietly in the back, near the wall.

"I bet Ashton will choose Dauntless for sure." Hunter shouts. Ashton rolls his eyes from beside me.

"Yeah, Hunter. Cause a shithead like me would actually survive in Amity or Erudite. Duh." He rolls his eyes once more, and this time I start laughing. Ashton puts a hand to his mouth. "Is that, Oh my god! Are you...laughing?!"

I punch him in the arm and he smiles. "Stop!" I giggle. Hunter and Olivia exchange glances whenever they see Ashton and I, and Olivia winks at me. I shudder.

"Time to jump, guys." Zeke says whenever the train slopes and begins to get closer to the ground. Zeke and my father leap off from where the stand, and the rest of us follow. I land on my feet, something that I am surprised by, considering the fact that I normally land on my back or my hands.

We walk across the perfect streets that can only be associated with the Hub and the Erudite and Candor sectors, and I sigh when I look up at the tall building, it's two prongs illuminating green and red, still visible even through the thick fog that hangs over the city.

We approach the building, then step inside after a cloud of Candor do. They head for the elevators, and we head for the stairs. I purse my lips as we race up the twenty flights, feeling my calves burning by the time we're halfway done.

"Fuck, man." Ashton says from behind me, his breathing heavy. I ignore the burning sensation in my calves and smirk at him as we walk inside.

"What? Was twenty flights too much for you to handle?" I ask him and he sighs. Abby and Ariana laugh from behind us, I guess Jordan is somewhere behind the rest of us. I'm just glad that he's leaving us me alone for once.
