Chapter 13:

As I walk through the narrow, dark, damp hallways off the side of the chasm, I study the small, blue, emergency lamps that dangle from the ceiling; providing light to the whole hallway in which they hang.

I then decide to study the apartment doors. A green lamp hangs beside each large, black wooden door, meaning that there is a lamp between each two doors. The apartment number is printed in white spray paint beneath the green lamp that hangs directly above it.

The lamp shines a dull light over each number, so that you can read them better. I sigh, pulling the bag of my clothes up on my shoulder as I continue to walk through the dim hallway, my mind still cloudy with sleep.

As I pass each apartment, I look at the numbers. I am looking to my left, so I am looking at the odd numerals. Three. Five. I look to my right, and see the even apartment numbers. This Is A very dark hallway, but the excitement to see my new apartment overrides all of the uncertainty.

I see a small piece of paper directly underneath the numbers next to the door. It reads:

Mads-
We already moved in most of your furniture for you, since we already knew about your apartment. You might just need to go shopping for a few extra things.
-Mom and Dad

I smile, and crumble up the paper into a round sphere, and shove it into my back pocket; which I also pull the key out of.

I carefully hold the small, silver, numeral indented key in my dainty hand. The key hovers carefully by the keyhole in the doorknob, ready to slide in at any moment.

People from other factions would probably not even see the keyhole, or perhaps the doorknob, but I've grown up in this cold, dark place, and I've become accustomed to the doors like this, so I can see the keyhole perfectly fine.

I shove the small key directly into the indention that is the key hole, and twist it to the right. I feel as if I can hear gears turning, and then I hear a click; signaling that the door has been unlocked.

I twist the doorknob, and the door unlatches from the doorway, and I push the door in, creating a slight creak before it opens. I hold a large breath as I walk into the apartment.

I step into the living room, then see, parallel to the door that I've just stepped in, a hallway.

I shut the door, then see the kitchen off to the left. I smile. I see that all of the living room furniture is here, and so are the main appliances in the kitchen. I walk over to the hallway and see three doors on the left side and two on the other.

The doors are open, so I just look inside. There's a guest bedroom on the first door to the left, a bathroom second, and a closet third.

On the right, the first one is just a bunch of cabinet doors that have shelves of emergency supplies and stuff inside. I look to the far end of the hall, where the other door is and see that it's the master bedroom. I grin.

This is a cozy little apartment. I feel at home here, and not like I'm living all by myself. I grin. Everything seems to be here. I don't know what my parents meant by going shopping, because I hate shopping and it doesn't even look like I'm gonna have to.

I sigh, walking into the bedroom and flopping down on the bed. This day has had no end.
