Chapter 7:

I wake to a jolt.

I look around the dormitory and see several black clad initiates running like mad men around the room. Today is the day that we visit the fence to see what the guards do everyday while they're on the job. It's usually just a transfer thing, but this year, The Dauntless Borns have to do it, too.

I climb down from the bottom bunk I was on, skipping my shower since I took one before I slept last night, I get dressed in a tight black t-shirt, and black skinny jeans, with combat boots.

I pull my hair into a ponytail, and walk to the dining hall. On my way there, I see none other than the happy couple themselves.

Jordan and Angela.

"Hey Mads." Angela says. I smile. "Hey." I reply. I'm not going to let my friendship die because Jordan has The amount of commitment that a goldfish possesses.

"Maddie, I'm sorry. I know th-" Jordan starts. I roll my eyes at him and send a death glare his way. If looks can kill, Jordan would be dead.

"Save it." I say, putting my hand in the air.

"I'm happy being single now." I say, then send him a bright smile. I then send him a hand gesture. I then walk on, leaving them right there in the cold, dimly lit hallway of the pit.

When I reach the nail covered double doors of the dining hall, I walk in, and sit down at the table with Abby, Ashton, Hunter, and Colsen. "Hey babe." He says, putting his arm around me and smiling; his small lip piercing seeming to glint in the darkness of the dining hall. I move his arm away.

I shake my head, "I don't feel very good. I'm just really tired." I say softly. He nods.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I see Uriah come up to me. He crouches down, and taps my shoulder. "Hmm?" I say, looking at him.

"Look. Maddie. I'm sorry that my son treated you like that. He should know better. I never brought him up to treat girls like that." He says, shaking his head.

"It's okay." I say, not fully believing myself. He bites his lip before he nods and walks away. As soon as Uriah walks away, Alexander and Joseph run up to us. Alexander is thirteen, along with Joseph, who is twelve.

Alex looks just like my mother, his light blue-gray eyes, the blonde hair, the shortness and skinniness. "What's Up sis?" He asks. "And who's this dude?"

"Oh, Alex," I say, ruffling his hair. "This is Steven, my friend." I say, gesturing to Colsen, who smiles.

"It's Colsen, Sup little man!" He says, high fiving Alex.

"Come on, Joseph! We gotta go to school! We're gonna be late!" Alex shouts, and they run off. Before he goes, though, Alex winks at me, then puts a finger through a hole that he's made with his other hand. I roll my eyes.

I continue to eat my muffin, and when I finish, I walk with Colsen and Abby to the train tracks. Uriah told us to meet Zeke there. He is taking the day off because he's tired, but honestly, I don't think he's any more tired than the rest of us, mainly because his day consists of walking and and not much else.

"I'll meet you two there!" Abby yells as she dashes away down the hall, disappearing from a view.

"Ya know. I heard you tell Alex that I was your friend. But, do you want to be my girlfriend?" He asks, his hard, blue-green eyes now soft, and considering.

I suck in a breath. "I...don't really know." I say, putting my hand on my hip. "I just broke up with Jordan, and I honestly don't know how you could want to date someone like me. I'm depressing as fuck. No one likes me."
