Addalin screams at the same time my phone goes off. I first pick up the baby then answer my phone even though she doesn't calm down.
"Hello?" I say, bouncing the baby.
"Um, hi. Is this Avi?" A woman says.
"Uh, yeah why?" I look at the contact and it says its from Kirstie, but kirstie isn't on the phone. "Is everything alright?" Addalin shrieks.
"Oh everything's fine. Is that a...baby?"
I groan. "Yeah, its my S.O.C.'s daughter. She's a little cranky. I'm sorry, um, who are you?"
She gasps. "Oh, gosh, I'm sorry. Its Ari. I have Kirstie. She showed up last night and I let her stay. Um, she's safe, but if you want to, you can come and get her. She's in the bath right now." She explained.
"Alright. Thanks. Um, has she said...anything to you?" I ask, trying to calm down Addalin. This child is worse than her mother.
"No, she hasn't." She said sadly.
"Okay." Addalin starts crying. "Goddamnit hold on." I tell her. "Scott!" I yell. I go back to the phone. "Sorry, I had to get her father."
Air chuckles. "No worries. I know how kids are. But uh, yeah if you wanna swing by soon, feel free to. I'll send you the address."
"Okay. Thank you, Ari. I'll be there as soon as I can."
"Alrighty, bye." She hangs up.
I look at Addalin, who is still screaming. I hold her under her arms and have her face me. "Okay, you, need to chill. You've been fed, you've been changed. Relax." I flick my eyes, forgetting that she is also an alpha. She screams even more while she flicks her eyes at me. This baby is very smart, I'll tell you that.
"Scott!" I yell again. Then I remember. Scott and Mitch left. Or well, Scott left. He had to carry Mitch out the door over his shoulder.
Mitch was furious that Scott let me watch her. It seems that the only person he wants to hold her and help out is Scott.
Kevin left last night. He got a call from a friend, saying that they needed help. Kevin was gone almost instantly.
So I am here, with a baby, who is screaming in my face. "Girl, I swear." I widened my eyes that were still red.
She settled down a little and looked at me, though she was still whining. Her eyes remained red. "Thank you." I say. "Now. We can hash this out, without you screaming at me." I go and put her in her car seat and grab her diaper bag and my keys. We get in the car and I drive.
By the time we get to the apartment, Addalin is asleep. I sigh and get out of the car. I put the keys in my pocket and grab the diaper bag and baby. Who knows how long I'll be here.
I walk, checking every few seconds to see if she wakes, which she doesn't. I get to the right door and I knock. A few seconds later Ari opens the door.
"Oh, hi. Come in." She moves and lets me in. Almost instantly I meet Kirstie's wide eyes. "Kirstie." I say.
She just stares at me.
I look to Ari. "Um, can you take her?" I point to the baby.
She smiles. "Of course!" She takes the car seat and goes to the couch.
I set down the diaper bag and walk over to Kirstie. Once I'm close enough, I see her eyes are fixated on the baby.
"Go. Hold her." I move to make way. She instantly goes to the baby. The clicked with that baby almost instantly. You can tell she wants to be a mother. I sigh.
I go over and I rub Kirstie's back. I get behind her and wrap my arms around her waist, kissing the side of her head, and look at the baby.
For a second, I get a glimpse of us doing this same thing, except with our own child. I give her a small squeeze, reminding myself that she's here and she's okay.
"Kirst. Please. Talk to me." I whisper in her ear. I hear a small sob as I move to grab the baby. She lets me and I hand Addalin to Ari.
Kirstie looks at me. She's got tears in her eyes. She looks terrified. She let out a heart breaking sob and collapsed into me.
I hold her shaking body as she sobs so hard that there is no sound. Ari takes Addalin to another room, thankfully.
"Baby girl, its okay. I've got you. I promise you that nothings gonna happen to you. Ever again. I won't let it happen." I whisper as I rock her. I lower us to the floor so he doesn't have to support herself at the moment.
Once on the floor, she pulls me forward. "I'm scared." She whispers. Then she tenses up and doesn't move. It's like shes frozen.
"Kirst? Kirstie!" I say. What the hell just happened? Wait. She spoke! "Kirstie answer me. Please. Why are you scared? Kirstie!"
It's like she wakes up from her daze. She smiles and looks at me. What the hell?
"Avi?" She chirps.
I shake my head and raise my eyebrow. "Kirstie?" I feel her forehead and face. "Are you okay? Are you sick?" I ask. I'm getting freaked.
"I'm fine." She smiles and stands. She holds out her hands for me. I grab it as I stand, but I don't take my eyes off of her. I know I said I wanted her to speak, but this is weird. "Where's Addi?" She says.
"Um, uh, Ari...has her. Um, Are you okay?" I ask again
"Avi, I'm fine. I promise." She gives me a kiss and saunters off to find Ari and the baby.
What. The hell. Was that? One minute...and then...huh? I rub my temples with my fingers and watch her as she walks.
She's back. Just like that. But...how?
I don't trust it at all. No one, no one, makes a recovery like that. Not that fast.
I need Kevin.
