~~~
Don't you just love when parents go on tangents about how bad things were for them or how we can't begin to comprehend what happened in the past and you just have to sit there and take it?
It keeps happening at dinner and basically makes me try to eat as quickly as possible so I can leave the table.
Today's wasn't as bad as the WW2 talk, but was in the top three worst ones.
It started off innocently enough with my mom mentioning that with online learning and my school dropping final exams I get off two days ahead of the original plan.
My sibling commented something like "lucky" in this really annoyed tone at me, to which I replied "um, you don't even have exams. You had two weeks of 'fun plans' to finish your school year off while I've been working to the very end".
And the she went "well yeah, but when I'm in high school I'll have to take exams".
I just- what?! So I went "so you're jealous of me, because all the future people in high school will have to take final exams while everyone currently in high school didn't have to". Her answer? Yes.
THAT'S NOT EVEN THE WORST PART
My mom butts into this with what sums up to "you think this is bad? My friends' college was flooded and they missed a full month of school and final exams".
To which I, like literally any other student would say, replied "nice".
Parents: proceed to blow up in a calm manner. Which basically can be cut down to this: "the flood happened, everything was flooded, they had to move back home because the dorms weren't safe, AND THIS WAS BEFORE CELLPHONES SO YOU KNOW IT WAS WORSE THAN WHAT YOU HAVE, so they never got to say goodbye to friends that they never saw again :("
And then that turned into a tangent about what they've done about floods during their lifetime which is: they've helped with sandbags at least once.
This is all well and fascinating, but uh.... WHY
The history lesson is great and all, but why in the world do you think that hearing about how bad it was back then when it flooded and they couldn't take exams is what I want to hear while I eat my sub sandwich and definitely won't make me have to try not to yeet myself away from the table?
I know y'all's parents and adults in your life do this too, the amount of times I've seen or heard of my friends' parents doing this makes me think it's just a think adults do, but why? Why does saying these things make any sense to say? Like, hooray, someone had to move and didn't have exams, but oh no they never saw their friends again because they didn't have cellphones how tragic! What does this have to do with my life except make me feel worse about my own problems, that I know aren't any less real because other people have had it worse, but this makes me forget that a lot?
I just really hate when people do that....
Stay safe kiddos, make sure to take time for your own relaxation!
I love you <3<3<3<3
