One Day

As the rain fell on a Tuesday morning, one could say it was quite fitting for the occasion. It seemed as though the sky was crying and deep down, Zhan Zheng Xi appreciated it. He stood in front of the mirror and readjusted his tie as he refused to look himself in the eyes. As his long, slender fingers fiddled with his tie, Zheng Xi's mind drifted off as it had been doing often. Images flashed though his mind and he felt his heart ache some more.

A knock at the door jolted him from his thoughts and he blinked rapidly to rid himself of the tears that threatened to spill over. He cleared his throat and and turned to face the door. "Come in." He called out. The door opened and He Tian and Mo Guan Shan walked into the room. Zheng Xi glanced over their faces and noticed that both of their eyes were slightly red, the same as his own. He said nothing but nodded at them in appreciation.

He Tian walked over and put a hand on Zheng Xi's shoulder, gripping slightly. "Everyone's ready when you are. It's time to say goodbye."

Zheng Xi glanced over at Guan Shan who was staring at the floor like it had hurt his feelings. Zheng Xi could understand why the boy was feeling uncomfortable for he too felt the same way. He had never been in this position before; how was he supposed to act? He wasn't sure. He nodded and the three left the room and made their way outside.

Zheng Xi faltered when he saw the coffin in the back of the hearse*. He would have lost his footing if He Tian hadn't been there to steady him by the elbow. The three made their way over and helped to carry the coffin inside the church. They took their seats at the front of the church, Zheng Xi sitting next to Jian Yi's mother, who hadn't stopping crying the entire time.

She looked at Zheng Xi as she took his hand in hers. "Why did they take my baby away from me?"

Zheng Xi took a deep breath to rid himself of the emotions that threatened to overwhelm him. He glanced over at He Tian and Guan Shan and saw that the pair were holding hands, gripping onto each other as if they were afraid that if they let go, they would lose each other. Maybe Zheng Xi should have done the same. "I don't know."

Zheng Xi watched as the coffin was lowered into the ground. The rain poured down and bounced off their umbrellas. The sounds of rain and crying were the only noises to be heard. Zheng Xi heart pounded in his chest as images of Jian Yi flashed through his mind. He could hold it in no more, he finally let his tears fall. It had been an accident, they said. Jian Yi was walking in the road when a car came speeding down and hit him.

A hand patted Zheng Xi gently on the back and he turned to see Guan Shan standing next to him staring at the coffin. Zheng Xi looked around and noticed that everyone had dispersed and He Tian was talking to Jian Yi's mother over by the cars. Zheng Xi wondered how long he had been standing there.

"If it weren't for Jian Yi," Guan Shan started as he clenched his jaw. "I wouldn't be friends with guys."

"He was my one regret." Zheng Xi shook his head, tears now spilling down his cheeks. "He was never mine, but losing him broke my heart. I should have made him mine." The pair closed their eyes as they reminisced in their memories with Jian Yi. Zheng Xi turned and glanced at He Tian who was now watching the pair. "You shouldn't have the same regret as me."

Guan Shan looked at him then looked behind them at He Tian. He breathed out heavily as he gripped Zheng Xi by the elbow. "It's not about us right now, it's about you. Come, let's go get a beer, the three of us."

Zheng Xi took one last look at the coffin and nodded. He took a deep breath and whispered into the wind, knowing it would be heard by no one except the one person he spoke the words for. Although gone, Jian Yi would never be forgotten.

"I love you, Jian Yi."
