One Day

"Maybe a nice walk now and then would cool your head down." Her soft, concerned voice spoke through the phone.

Mo Guan Shan sighed, his fingertips brushed lightly against the bubbles that floated gently in the hot bath. "Ma, I work all day, I don't have the time or energy to take walks." It also didn't help that he got home late at night and the surrounding woods weren't safe, no matter how beautiful and mystical they looked during the day. "I have to go, it's late."

"Okay, I love you and stay safe." She sighed, as if sad to be letting him go.

"Love you too." He hung up and threw his phone lightly onto the mat. He released a heavy sigh before lowering himself fully beneath the water, letting it surround him.

He got out and wrapped the towel around himself before picking up his phone and travelling the long hallway towards his bedroom where he put on black shorts and a grey shirt. As he dressed, he listened to his surroundings. The trees outside seemed to whisper untold secrets to one another. The creaking of the floorboards told him the house was old and had many stories behind it, ones he would never learn.

His stomach grumbled and Guan Shan remembered he hadn't eaten since lunchtime so he made his way down the stairs and into the dark kitchen where he opened the fridge door and took out a cookie he had made yesterday evening from its container. He shuts the door and turns to leave when a deep voice calls out to him.

"Midnight cravings?"

Guan Shan whirls around, his heart jumping in his chest - from not knowing anyone else was in the house or from recognising the voice, he wasn't sure. His eyes focused in the dark and he made a figure sitting at the kitchen table in the shadows. Guan Shan's eyes focus harder and he can now see the man better.

His enemy, his friend, his complicated lover.

He Tian.

His white shirt was torn in many places and he had spots of blood dotted everywhere. A black eye and a cut across his cheek stood out on his strikingly handsome face. Concern bloomed in Guan Shan's chest but he remained still, staring at the man before him as he took a sip of water.

"Everything alright?" Guan Shan gently asked. He got no response, just a stare that had so much longing in it, it almost frightened him. He moved to stand in front of him and He Tian parted his legs so Guan Shan stands between them.

He Tian reached out and gently took Guan Shan's hand, bringing it up to his face, and rested it on his slightly bruised cheek. He kissed the palm of Guan Shan's hand and moved it away before taking a bite of the forgotten cookie in Guan Shan's hand.

He Tian sighed and his eyes fluttered closed as if savouring the moment. He squeezed Guan Shan's hand slightly before looking up at him and whispering, "Exactly how I imagined it would taste," causing Guan Shan to blush slightly. He Tian got up and made eye contact with Guan Shan for all but a second before he brushed past him and walked out of the house. Guan Shan's eyes followed him until he was out of sight.

"Tell me, Ma," Guan Shan murmured to himself. "why would I ever got outside when what I want always come to me? I've got all I need right here."
