"good morning, everyone!" professor sprout called out, hitting a large pot to gather everyone's attention.

"good morning, professor sprout." the children said.

"welcome to greenhouse three, second years. gather around, everyone."

y/n looked up only towards marley as pansy didn't have this class at this time, giving her friend a smile. everyone took a few steps closer towards all of the greenery that sat on the table before them.

"today, we're going to re-pot mandrakes. who here can tell me the properties of the mandrake root?" professor sprout asked.

as usual, hermione raised her hand. "mandrake, or mandragora, is used to return those who have been petrified to their original state. it's also quite dangerous. the mandrakes cry is fatal to anyone who hears it."

professor sprout then told the children to put on the earmuffs she had given them and y/n quickly pulled hers on over her y/h/c hair. she then turned and looked at draco who was stood next to her, watching as he held a disgusted face and put on his earmuffs. he smiled at her once he realized she was watching him.

everyone watched as professor sprout pulled her mandrake from the soil, the cry causing everyone to pull their hands tightly to their ears. neville then fainted, earning a chuckle from draco. y/n nudged him in the side and glared at him.

after, professor sprout instructed everyone to follow the steps she had just taken. y/n grabbed her mandrake firmly and pulled it up, wincing as it cried. she quickly shoved it into an empty pot and covered it with dirt.

she looked over at malfoy who was smirking and laughing at his mandrake as he held it in his hand, tickling its stomach. he then stuck his gloved finger in its mouth as the mandrake bit it, pulling his finger away as quickly as he could. y/n laughed at him.

"oh shut up, y/l/n." he said has he threw it into his empty pot.

while sat down for dinner, everyone chatted whilst munching away at the food sat on their plates. an owl soon flew in, everyone's attention going towards the bird. it flew down towards the gryffindor table. it then lost control and rolled across the table, spraying food everywhere. y/n watched as the owl dropped a letter into ron's hands and then quickly flew away. "look everyone. weasley's got himself a howler!"

everyone laughed, including y/n, as she knew exactly what was about to be said in that letter. she watched as the envelope opened itself up and began to scream at the young boy, terror on his face. after the screaming words from his mother, the letter then began to rip into small pieces.

"about time." draco snarled.

the next morning y/n sat next to draco in her class, doodling small drawings in her notebook as they waited for class to start. a door opened from up the small staircase in the room and gilderoy lockhart stepped out. "let me introduce you to your new defense against the dark arts teacher. me. gilderoy lockhart, order of merlin, third class, honorary member of the dark force defense league and five times winner of witch weeklys most charming smile award."

y/n and malfoy both rolled their eyes as they noticed all the girls began to stare in awe. y/n looked at the boy next to her and held up a finger to her mouth, silently gagging. he laughed along with her.

"now, be warned. it is my job to arm you against the foulest creatures known to wizardkind," professor lockhart started as he walked around a cage that had been concealed by a purple covering. he tapped the cage and it began to move around. "you may find yourselves facing your worst fears in this room. know only that no harm can befall you whilst i am here. i must ask you not to scream. it might provoke them!"

he then pulled off the covering, dozens of pixies hanging off of the bars, trying their hardest to escape. lockhart then opened the cage as the purple creatures flew out. they flew through the students, knocking down books and throwing them around. y/n gasped and quickly pulled draco up, the two of them running for cover. he grabbed her arm and ran out of the classroom, shielding his head.

still holding her arm, draco pulled y/n out into the courtyard. he stood there to catch his breath as y/n just laughed, picturing the scared look on lockharts face.

"i can not believe that man let those creatures fly around in the classroom. just wait until my father hears about this." malfoy said as he straightened out his robe.

"oh, most definitely. i can't wait to to tell my father about this, too." y/n said as she mocked him.

he just glared at her, "i don't appreciate the sarcasm, y/n."

"get used to it." she said as she walked back into the castle, leaving draco outside by himself.

she began to walk towards the library, as she now had about 40 minutes of free time before her next class.

that afternoon, marley was laid down on her stomach in the grass while y/n and pansy sat on either side of her with their legs crisscrossed. they weren't speaking, but were instead doing their own bits of reading while enjoying each other's company. y/n then looked up to see not only the gryffindor quidditch team walk out, but the slytherin team as well.

"oh god." she said, as her friends looked up towards where she was looking. "this can't be good."

the three girls stood up and walked over to the slytherin team.

"where do you think you're going, flint?" the gryffindor captain asked.

"quidditch practice." marcus replied.

"i booked the pitch for gryffindor today."

marcus laughed, "easy, wood. i've got a note." he then handed the rolled up parchment to oliver who read it out loud.

"you've got a new seeker. who?"

y/n then watched as draco stepped out to the front. she smirked, knowing the boy had no real love for the game but had simply wanted to one up harry.

"malfoy?" harry questioned.

"that's right. and that's not all that's new this year." he pointed to the teams brooms.

"a gift from draco's father." marcus said as he smiled proudly.

draco then turned towards ron and hermione, who were stood near the gryffindor team, "you see, weasley, unlike some, my father can afford the best."

"at least no one on the gryffindor team had to buy their way in. they got in on pure talent." hermione chimed in.

y/n, marley, and pansy just watched everything happen. y/n didn't want to defend one of her friends and offend the other.

draco stepped over towards hermione, "no one asked your opinion, you filthy little mudblood."

his words had obviously hurt the girl in front of him, and y/n sighed. she knew she would have to check in on hermione after and apologize on his behalf.

"you'll pay for that one, malfoy! eat slugs!" ron said as he took his wand from his pocket and pointed it at draco. however, due to ron's broken wand the spell hit him instead of the blonde boy, sending him backwards.

y/n grimaced and turned towards draco, rolling her eyes at him before walking away.
