"y/n,

i miss you, too! i am more than delighted to know that school is only three days away. i can't wait to see you. as for me, i am doing okay. haven't done much, to be honest. also, i am so happy to hear that your father has been promoted. he's always been a hard working man. father says he rather enjoys the company from yours. i'll see you soon.

- draco"

y/n allowed her eyes to skim over the piece of parchment more times than she would like to admit. draco had indeed kept his promise and wrote letters over the summer, however he had only sent out about 6 over the three month time period. the girl didn't mind though, she was just thrilled that he had actually spoken to her.

she set the letter down gently on her book shelf, on top of all of the other letters draco had written her. she then skipped over to the large mirror she had in her room and looked into it. she looked much older than she had when she had first attended hogwarts. she had slimmed down quite a bit and grew a little taller. she gently traced her fingers over her hips as her body had started to become more curvy. her eyes still held the same happy expression and her y/h/c had grown longer. she was happy with herself, and there was no doubt about it.

she turned and walked out of her room, starting down the staircase towards the main sitting room. she saw her mother and father sat closely together watching something on the television, a teacup resting in her mum's hand.

"what are you guys watching?" she asked as she sat down in a big, cushioned chair.

"oh, just the news." her father said as he turned towards her and gave a small smile.

her mum then set the teacup down on a small table that sat next to her, "are you excited for your third year at hogwarts? maybe even more excited to see a certain boy?"

y/n laughed slightly and nodded her head, "yes. i just wish i was able to learn more about my other powers than just my wizarding ones."

"i know, my dear, but until we know that you know how to control them properly, it's far too dangerous to allow you to use them outside of the house yet."

y/n sighed. her parents had taught her how to use her other powers a lot over the summer to the best of their ability, even though it was hard as she were the only one in their entire bloodline to possess it.

she was informed that the trait she had made her out to be not only a witch, but also a 'stoichiatric technician', the word 'stoichi' coming from the greek root for their elements. y/n thought the word was far too complicated to say so she stuck to just calling herself an "elemental", someone who could control all of the elements with just the tips of her fingers.

y/n once again sighed and turned to head back to her room. she decided she wanted to write one last letter to draco before the summer ended.

"got everything, dear?" her father asked. the two walked side by side down the kings cross station. this year, her mother had stayed at work as sage had become sick so she had no one to fill in. y/n had her owls cage in her hand while her father held her trunk.

"yes sir." she said as she smiled up at her dad.

they walked through the pillar and were soon greeted by lucius and his son.

"draco!" y/n said as she sat willows cage down gently. the two embraced into a hug as he laughed into her hair after she had almost tackled him on to the ground.

"lucius, what a nice surprise it is to see you." her father said as he shook mr. malfoys hand.

"a nice surprise, indeed, y/f/n."

y/n beamed at the boy in front of her, like her, he had changed tremendously over the summer. he was much taller now and basically towered over her. his once slicked back hair fell softly down his forehead while it was parted in the middle; it looked so soft that y/n couldn't help but imagine running her fingers through it.

the fathers said good bye to their children as y/n and draco boarded the train. the duo was soon met with pansy, marley, and blaise and they all sat down at a table, talking about all of their summer experiences.

the train ride was smooth and pleasant, even with the heavy storm that was happening outside of the windows. y/n was sat leaned into draco's side as he had his arm wrapped tightly around her shoulder. soon, however, the train was hauled to a stop and the lights began to flicker.

"what's going on?" y/n asked as she sat up straighter, letting dracos arm fall down to her back. she turned towards the rest of the students on the train and they all looked equally confused. the lights then shut off completely.

y/n realized the train was becoming incredibly cold and she started to shiver lightly. she watched as draco removed his jacket and placed it around her to help keep her warm. the train was jerked forward a little before marley quickly spoke up, "bloody hell! what's happening?"

"i don't know." y/n said as she looked between her friends. a few minutes later, the lights turned back on and the train continued on its way.

the group soon continued their conversations but however became more cautious about their surroundings.

arriving at the castle, the third years quickly made their way to the carriages, trying to get out of the rain quickly. once the carriages stopped, they all ran inside and were quickly escorted into the great hall. after the new group of first years were placed in their houses, a choir stood in the front and began to sing.

"welcome! welcome to another year at hogwarts!" dumbledore said as he stood up after the choir was finished. "now, i'd like to say a few words before we all become too befuddled by our excellent feast. first, i'm pleased to welcome professor r.j. lupin who has kindly consented to fill the post of defense against the dark arts teacher!"

y/n laughed while she was sat next to both draco and marley. pansy, crabbe, goyle and blaise were sat on the opposite side. she couldn't stop thinking about the teacher from last year, professor lockhart, as he turned out to be one of the biggest frauds she had ever known.

"watch this," draco said to y/n as he turned around towards the gryffindor table, "potter! potter, is it true that you fainted? i mean you actually fainted?"

y/n just looked over at her old friends, a smirk on her face. she didn't care about them anymore truly. none of them had reached out to her after the predicament last year and she knew they were happier without her there.

"shove off, malfoy." ron spat as he glared at the blonde boy. he then directed his eyes towards y/n and glared at her, too. she only rolled her eyes at him before turning both her and draco back around.

dumbledore then announced that hagrid would be the new care for magical creatures teacher, and y/n clapped. she loved hagrid, though snape still remained as her favorite teacher.

"finally, on a more disquieting note, at the request of the ministry of magic, hogwarts will, until further notice, play host to the dementors of azkaban, until such a time as sirius black is captured."

y/n had quickly learned after leaving the train that a dementor was the thing that had boarded it and she had already known about sirius black escaping his cell as both her mother and her father told her constantly to be careful.

"the dementors will be stationed at every entrance to the grounds. now whilst i've been assured that their presence will not disrupt our day to day activities, a word of caution. dementors are vicious creatures. they'll not distinguish between the one they hunt and the one who gets in their way. therefore, i must warn each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you. it is not in the nature of a dementor to be forgiving. but you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times,"

y/n turned towards draco as she looked at him after the words their headmaster had spoke. she smiled at him and he looked down and smiled at her. he then grabbed her hand that was closest to him and held it with his own.
