"so tell me, cormac, do you see anything of your uncle tiberius these days?" slughorn asked as he took a small bite of his ice cream.

"yes, sir. in fact, i'm meant to go hunting with him and the minister for magic over the holidays." the boy said.

y/n sat at the table next to blaise. she played with her ice cream, not interested in it at all. all she wanted to do was curl up in her bed and sleep all of the days away. the boy next to her noticed and placed a comforting hand on her knee. he didn't know why she was so upset, but he knew it had something to do with her and draco.

"what about you, miss y/l/n. how are your parents doing?" slughorn asked her.

she looked up, putting on a fake smile, "they're alright. father's still working in the ministry and mum is still creating spells. she opened up a book shop a few years ago."

slughorn nodded, "yes, yes. i'm familiar with your mother. an incredible witch, one of the best if i do say so myself."

y/n smiled before turning her attention back to her ice cream.

"do you want to talk about it?" blaise whispered into her ear and she shook her head, that was the last thing she wanted to do.

"how about you, miss granger? what does your family do in the muggle world?"

the room went silent as all eyes turned towards hermione, "my parents are dentists. they tend to people's teeth."

"fascinating. and is this considered a dangerous profession?" slughorn asked.

"no," hermione shook her head, "although, one boy, robbie fenwick, did bite my father once. he needed 10 stitches."

the room grew silent once more and everyone began to chat quietly to each other. slughorn finally let them go and y/n was faster than anyone as she got up to leave.

y/n laid on her bed with her head buried deep into her pillow. she hadn't moved from her position since early last night and marley watched her sadly from her own bed.

"y/n, you need to eat." marley said quietly, "please, at least come with me to grab something and we can come right back up here."

"i'm not hungry." y/n said weakly.

marley sighed and walked towards her best friends bed. she sat down next to her as she stroked her hair softly, "talk to him."

"there's nothing to talk about. i already know what's happening. he's one of them, mars. there's nothing i can do."

"what you need to do is be there for him. he's going through an incredibly difficult time and it's obvious he's being forced to do this. this is draco we're talking about, he talks a big game but deep down we both know that he wouldn't do something like this willingly."

y/n sighed and took her words in, marley was right. "besides, you have to get up anyway. slytherin is playing gryffindor today."

~

the snow came down heavily and a freezing wind blew through the air. marley had finally been successful is dragging y/n out of bed and they were both now stood in the stands wrapped up in warm clothing.

the game was fantastic and y/n couldn't take her eyes off of ron. he was doing absolutely amazing, way better than she unfortunately thought he would. the stands roared with cheers as everyone screamed out the boys name.

gryffindor ended up taking the win, and y/n couldn't even pretend to be upset about it. after the game ended she ran as quickly as she could to ron, taking him into a giant hug, "you were incredible, ron."

"thank you, thank you. my autograph is available." he said as he gave a small bow causing her to laugh and shove him gently with her hand.

she turned and walked with marley back up towards the castle, desperately wanting to crawl back into bed once more.

~

y/n stood in a small green dress that went down to the middle of her thighs. her hair was left down and she wore only a small bit of makeup to hide the dark bags under her eyes from lack of sleep. she didn't want to attend slughorns christmas party, but she figured it would be rude if she didn't show.

she walked alongside of blaise, she hadn't spoken to draco in the past few days and marley was crammed with studying for her ancient ruins test. she didn't mind though, she loved blaise and was more than thrilled when he suggested that they just take each other.

"if you want to, we can leave at any moment." blaise assured her as he rested a hand on her shoulder.

"thank you, but i'm fine, i promise. just a bit tired." she said as she yawned.

"i can tell." he said through a small chuckle and she just smiled.

"drink?" neville asked as he approached them, holding a small silver platter.

y/n nodded and took a glass, "thank you, neville. i'm happy to see you."

"me too, y/n." he stammered, "you look beautiful."

"thank you." she smiled. he then walked away and y/n turned her attention back to blaise. not long after, a voice y/n loved made her widen her eyes.

"take your hands off me, you filthy squib!"

filch had draco by his jacket and pulled him into the middle of the room. "professor slughorn, sir." filch began, "i just discovered this boy lurking in an upstairs corridor. he claims to have been invited to your party."

"okay, okay! i was gate crashing! happy?" draco said.

"i'll escort him out." snape said as he approached the two.

"certainly, professor." draco spat as filch finally let him go.

the two turned to leave and y/n gave blaise a sad look and he nodded. she ran after the two, finally catching up to them as she turned a corner. snape had draco pinned against the wall.

"i swore to protect you. i made the unbreakable vow." snape said angrily.

"i don't need protection!" draco said through gritted teeth, "i was chosen for this. out of all others. me! and i won't fail him!"

y/n took a few steps forward, allowing her presence to be known. snape looked at her furiously and draco looked at her regretfully, "you're failing me, draco."

snape glared at her and turned away, leaving as fast as he could. draco stared at her, completely stunned by her words.

"you don't want to do this, baby, please." she said as she walked up to him slowly, "i know you, draco. you're afraid but please, please don't do this."

"you don't understand, y/n,"

"i do! i'm not blind, i see what's going on. but i'm here, i'm here for you and i'm not going anywhere." she began to cry again, she felt so weak and fragile.

"this is out of your hands, my love. i'm sorry."
