I knew my hair smelled like the ocean for te second night in a row. It was 1:30 in the morning, and I was staring at my ceiling fan. The lights were off, but I could feel the shadows of the blades moving in circles. I let out my breath, heart tightening. Where the hell has these two days gone?
After having a fire last night, a lot of friends from school got word that the boys were home, so they decided they'd go to the beach two nights in a row to hang out with people they havne't seen since school ended. Most of the day was spent together and apart. Alex saw my dad, and my dad had a million questions about touring. I went to see Rian's parents and Kara's as well.
Even though they'd spent five weeks together, they still wanted to hang out. I loved that more than anything. I loved the fact that no matter how long they were together, they never got sick of one another like they did in high school. I was happy that Jack asked me constantly throughout the day when he would see me again, and Zack wanted to see how I was doing on the acoustic. I loved that my friends never got sick of each other, of me, and they wanted me around. I loved that Alex wanted me around too.
The two days was up, and by tomorrow in the early afternoon, they'd be gone again. Jack wouldn't be there to wake me up, Zack wouldn't be there to talk to, Rian and Kara would be just faces on the computer screen and Alex would be miles away.
I didn't want to think about how far away Alex was. I didn't want to think about how I had barely gotten any alone time with him, or the fact thattomorrow morning would be the only time I had. My hours were running away, and I was sitting here, breath getting shallow, lungs caving in.
I felt my phone vibrate on the sheets next to me. It was cold in my room because of the air conditioner. I had pulled Alex's sweatshirt over my head after I got home. I was too lazy to find a shirt, and only wore a bra under it. I was in a pair of yoga pants and my hair was a salty mess from the beach.
I picked up the phone, reading the screen. Alex's name flashed with a small "calling.." written under it. I swiped it open, pressing to my ear in confusion. "Hello?"
"Turn off your sprinklers," Alex hissed through the phone, "I don't want to get soaked."
My head perked up off my bed, flipping on the light. I slid out from underneath my sheets to peek through the blinds. It was hard to see past the glare from the lights. I could see towards the side of my house. It was easy to see the sprinklers going, just like they always did at night. I squinted at the edge of the wods, seeing a small flash from his phone. I looked harder, noticing a dark figure at the edge, waiting impatiently.
"Oh, fuck it," he sighed, answering his own question. I hadn't realized I didn't answer. I laughed out loud as he ran across the yard, trying his best to dodge the water. I noticed when he was almost to the edge, he was watching the sprinklers. I cracked myself up, letting the shade fall.
Seconds later, there was a hurried knock on my door. I moved quickly to unlock it. Alex gasped, falling into my room. He pushed the door open and closed it behind him. I laughed at his wet appearance. He had grass on his face, which gave me the idea that he fell. It caused an even louder laugh from my lungs.
"Jesus, those things are worse than dogs," he grumbled, pulling off his sweatshirt. Luckily, his white v-neck was completely dry. His blue hoodie was soaked. I shook my head, walking to my dresser and pulling open the bottom drawer. I fumbled through the clothes, remembering a pair of shorts of his that I had. I still don't know how I acquired them, but they were here. I tossed them in his direction, closing the drawer with my foot. He caught them, sighing slightly. I could only imagine that he was cold. It was only seventy in my room.
