"What time is it?" Lauren groaned in my direction. I pulled my sunglasses of my nose slightly, looking towards her from my position on my back.
The towel I was using was placed on one of the lounge chairs in the yard. Lauren was on her stomach, exposing her back without straps. She'd untied the lime green strings, trying not to gain unattractive tan lines. She was tiny, and her backbone was showing through the position she was in. She had a large pair of sunglasses over her eyes.
I pulled my phone off the table I'd put between us. It had two large cups of iced tea and our phones on it. I hit a button, allowing the light to cover my eyes, and reveal the time, 4:16.
"Quarter past four," i sighed, putting my phone back down. I picked up my glass, sipping from the straw. I played with my pink and green sequined bikini top. The pink swirled around in patterns all the way up the straps. The green part underneath was pretty goo, but the outfit was just too tempting to pick at with my fingers.
"You're going to ruin your bathing suit," Lauren pointed out. I sighed, knowing she was right. I don't know why bathing suits that are supposed to be all complex and interesting. All I did was pull at the ends until they snapped off.
My fingers moved to play with the tassles of my pink, string bottoms. I never sat outside and just laid in the sun. When I was outside, there was a reason. Either I was reading a book, playing the guitar or piano, or helping my dad with something. This was a first for me.
I didn't think Lauren would text me first, but it made me happy for her to ask to do something today. We were both up pretty early, and have been out here since twelve. I could feel the tops of my shoulders beginning to fry. Lauren's fair skin was an off shade of red, but sure to even out after today.
"I think four hours of lying in the sun is good for me," Lauren chuckled, reaching awkwardly to tie the strings along her back. I laughed, noddig while sitting up from my seat. I stood up, stretching with a yawn.
I moved the chairs to their rightful places around the pool, and hung my towel on the fence to air dry, Lauren sliding her white shorts on over her suit, glancing at me for a moment and smiling. "I hate to say it, but without the boys, we're boring as hell."
"I realized that the day they left," I laughed, shaking my head.
I missed Alex a lot, a lot more than I let on. It was more bearable than I thought it was going to be, though. It sucked to wake up and not be able to have him come over, but I was trying not to think about it. I was just going day by day, hoping that every day was just a little shorter than the last.
"We should go to the beach," she smiled, and before I even reponded, I was walking towards my room, ready to grab my keys and my guitar.
She chuckled as I pulled the things from my room, admitting that I hadn't been to the beach in the longest time, not since I'd lived in Texas at the very end of my sophomore year. Every time I moved to a state that wasn't land locked, it was winter and I wasn't able to go before I moved again.
So, we packed up, and I couldn't tell you how ready I was to leave. I really wanted to go, and I wasn't sure why. There was something inside of me that was urging me to go, like I had to; like there was something important for me there. As soon as the word escaped her lips, I was set. I needed to go.
My dad wouldn't be home until at least dinner time, so I left him a note on the counter. I had my keys in my fingers and my guitar over my back. We were driving five minutes later, with my windows down and my iPod blaring through the speakers. The first thing we had on was the boys EP. I was listening to it a few days before, because Alex informed me that Coffee Shop Soundtrack was a fan favorite at the moment.
