There was a certain beauty in having two days worth of shows at the same venue. There was such an abundance of people that wanted tickets it was a last minute decision to add another tour date back in Arkansas. It was a relief for the traveling and people were able to walk around the venue instead of just plying in them.
So, instead of going to catering after all of the shows were over, I wandered throughout the venue and searched the stages. It felt like it was the olny time I ever got to see everything without anybody around. It made me feel empty without people filling the stages, and fans running to reach the shows they wanted to see. It gave me a similar feeling to when my dad and I shut down everything inside of the house.
The sun was almost set over the tops of the tall trees, and it left an orange tint to the atmosphere around me. I didn't mind it, though. It was a humid day, and the now cool air was refreshing against my skin. Alex's sweatshirt hugged my sides, and I was comfortable with the weather.
My eyes fell on a few crew members that were moving equipment to the back of the stages to lock up for the night. They removed the rails that normally sat in front of the stage to keep people back. Some of the fans got a little crazy sometimes.
So, I hopped onto the platform with ease, noticing some famliar faces as they moved around the stage. A lot of the same people worked on the All Time Low stage, and I smiled at them briefly, setting my mind on something that was under the shelter of the overhand that was offered by the simple stage.
It was a slick, black grand piano. I silently wondered and cursed the person who managed to get their hands on this and play every day. It was a Baldwin, and looked pretty much brand new. I was sure there was no knick in the paint, no key off, it was stunning
"Who's piano?" I asked at random, wondering if anyone would know the answer. The stage crew shrugged for the most part, and one woman that I've seen more than once nodded towards it with a small smile. Her long brown hair swayed with her movements. She knew I wanted to play. Mabe it was the lust I had in my eyes for the bench, how badly I wanted to hear its melodies.
"I trust you to not break anything. We're headed off to dinner, have fun," she said with tired eyes. I grinned towards her as a small thank you escaped my lips. She and the three other men disappeared behind the stage to make their way to the white tent where food was being kept warm for last minute workers.
I glanced off the stage towards the area where the crowd would be. My heart jumped at the thought of hundreds of fans screaming my name. I tried to think of even ten people that would cheer me on for playing music on the piano or failing to attempt a decent guitar piece. I was still working on my acoustic when I had time after the shows before we went to bed.
I sat down on the hard stool, and instantly I felt at home. I felt my lungs let out a sigh in contentment, a genuine smile finding its way onto my lips as I placed my fingers on the keys. My heart was warm as I touched the tops of the white and black keys with the tips of my fingers so lightly I hadn't pressed them down yet. I really did forget how much I missed the piano. I couldn't take my electric with me because it took up way too much space. Alex offered to take it but I just couldn't bring myself to take up more space on the already cramped quarters. I was just trying to be generous, but at this point it felt like I was suffocating without it. And now, with the soft keys under my touch, I felt okay again.
I pressed down on the keys, playing a classical piece that my dad told me that he used to put me to sleep with. My grandfather was into classical music, and made my dad take lessons by force when he was younger. He was the reason I really got into it. La 'Fille Aved Chevex de Lin' by Debussy. I've been playing it since I was eleven, and it's one of my favorites. Sometimes, if I play it when I can't sleep, I start to get drowsy. It's funny how memories and the body work as one.
