I held the hose out in front of me, using the pressure against the white plastic of the lounge chairs for our back yard. My dad decided that it'd be a wonderful idea to open the pool in the beginning of April, for the fact that we had a heated pool, and he wanted to use it. The weather was actually nice lately. It was in the mid-sixties, which left me in fitted capris, and a white long-sleeved shirt.

Somehow, he'd convinced me to invite Adam over so he'd help him open the pool, mostly because he didn't know how to himself. We'd never had a pool before, and this was an in ground pool. I was sure he was going to treat it like his baby. He had always wanted a pool like this, with the dark stone that surrounded it. This whole house seemed like a dream come true.

So, he made me drag the lawn chairs and cushions ut from the shed that was by the fence. Our backyard was perfectly big for the two of us, honestly. I'm sure my dad knew that when he bought the place.

"How the hell do you take the cover off?" my dad grumbled loudly, trying to unhook the small latches that held the tarp over the top of the water.

Adam was showing him how to use everything, considering he had pool himself. Since his dad wasn't around much, he normally helped his mother and sister in opening it every year.

I was still trying to avoid the obvious fact that Adam and my dad got along so well. Sometimes they'd sit in the living room and watch football and baseball together. It was like they were friends, tor eplace the spot in their heart that was missing a father and a son.

My heart twisted into knots at the idea, and my head pounded. It was so perfect, this whole situation. I fucked it all up, though. Sometimes people say to just forget about it, and to pretend like nothing happened. Something did happen, because, for whatever reason, I can't bring myself to take the bandana off my arm.

I hadn't realized that I'd been washing the same part of the chair until I noticed how white it was compared to the rest of it. I shook my head and continued to clean the best I could before setting them down to dry. There were six chairs and I'd only cleaned two of them.

After another few minutes of Adam and my dad unhooking all the clips, they lifted the cover off the pool to reveal a murky green liquid that both my father and I cringed at. We never had to deal with a pool that wasn't ready to use.

Adam chuckled at our reactions and grabbed the skimmer that he'd pulled out of the shed. "In less than a week it'll be completely clean," he assured while handing my dad the pole and attaching the had of the skimmer to it. He pointed towards the pool before saying "clean the surface of thepool; all the leave sand the bugs need to be gone. I'll get the vacuum."

Adam strode over to the other side of the pool near me, fingers running along my lower back lightly. I shivered under his touch, and he laughed. He thoght it was because I was ticklish, but it was just because his touch was torture. I wanted him to stop wanting to be around me. I didn't deserve him.

"Hi," he mumbled into my ear, kissing my cheek. I turned my head towards him and smiled half-heartedly before deciding to become distracted by my cleaning. I had barely made a dent on the chairs. My mind would stop wandering to the worst things going on. My head wanted me to suffer with what I did, and sadly, I was more than willing. I deserved that much.

For the next hour, I lost track of my hands and fumbled with the chairs, placing them around the pool. Adam had most of the pool vacuumed, and my dad was cleaning the skimmer off over the side of the fence. It was nearly silent the whole time, and I was hapy to be alone in my mind, sulking quietly.
