"Sorry you have to help move all these boxes, Stell," my dad mumbled as I helped him carry in our new television. Our old one had a spider crack in the screen from when we moved. This entire week was spent trying to get everything into our new house. God only knew how long this would even last.
"It's fine," I breathed out while helping him set it against the wall of the living room. This house was so different compared to the house I used to be in. I was still getting used to it. In Arizona we had a two bedroom condo, it was just enough for us. It's always been just my dad and me. We never really needed much to be content. You learn to appreciate things when you move around a lot.
This house was way too much. He found a house only weeks before we actually came. These moves were always quick and sudden. I was only in my old school for two weeks before we moved. I never really minded. This is how it always was.
It was a two bedroom house, over 1300 square feet. For two people that's a lot of space. There were two bedroomw, one upstairs and one downstairs. Our living room was an olive green color; the kitchen was completely remodeled with black granite and white cabinets. My da bought a new dining room table that we'd never use. One bedroom was his to use, and th eother ould be his 'man cave'. As if the entire house wasn't enough 'man cave' for him already. The last room was my bedroom, which was something else entirely.
The previous owners made the back yard into a place where there three children could go wild: complete with an in-ground pool, deck and pool house. The pool house was my new abode. It was a guest house, complete with a full bathroom, something I'd claimed for myself the second we got here. The floors were gray and white tile that was covered by my new white rug. I convinced my father to buy me a new blue love seat and arm chair to match because the extra space that was available, and to add a television. My bed frame was the same that it always was, a very simple black iron frame, along with my dressers, full length mirror, and bedside tables. The part that I liked the best about my new room was the sky lights and open windows that led to the pool. I had black curtains to close at night, but in the day it was gorgeous.
This house was more than enough for my dad and me. It was the nicest place we'd ever had, honestly. My dad was convinced this would be the last move, and he tried to prove it by splurging on the extra things we never had before, like big bedrooms, and dining room tables. We lived a simple life, and I was okay with that.
"How's school going? It feels like I've been on base twenty-four-seven this whole week," he let out a sigh while collapsing on the brown leather couch we'd brought inside. I sat down next to him, shrugging while putting my hands behind my head.
"It's okay, I guess," I said with disdain. My dad knew how much I hated switching schools, even if I was never really leaving anything behind. I learned to never get attached to people, when I would, I'd have to leave, and have to pick up the pieces of myself again.
"Meet any new friends?" he raised his thick eyebrows at me. He had a crew cut, which didn't allow his bald spot to show as much. His eyes were a reflection of my own, his skin aged from sun and stress. My nose was so much like his. It was large and round. I hated my nose, but on my dad, it looked just right.
"Sory of," I reasoned with him. Kara and I had been talking in school this past week. She was really nice, and Rian and Jack were great too. Alex was managable and not too much of a pain, yet.
"That's always good," He patted my leg, large fingers clasping over my knee. "You should invite them over. You have that entire guest house to yourself, and it'll get lonely over there."
"Yeah, sure," I nodded in agreement. I knew deep down that I'd never do that. I couldn't remember the last time I had anyone over at my house.
"What do you want for dinner?" He asked, while standing up slowly, stretching his back. He walked into the kitchen briefly and brought back four menus.
"Whatever you want, I'm not that hungry.
"Why don't we try that pizza place down the street? You love pizza," he grinned at me. I stuck my tongue out at him. He knew how much I couldn't stand piza.
"Is there Chinese around here?" I laughed, stretching in my seat. He chuckled lightly whlie flipping through more menus.
"Subs?"
"Sure."
"Steak bomb, extra cheese?" he questioned while pulling out his BlackBerry from his pocket. I felt a small smile rise to my lips when I nodded at him. I loved how my dad and I just got each other than way. He knows me too well.
